If the oil on the dipstick is above the high level mark, is that something to be worried about? Obviously low is no good, but is high bad for the engine? Something that has crossed my mind and I figured someone here would know.  | ||

Don't worry about having to much oil in the tank. Worry instead, about having to much oil on your rear tire. | ||

Do!! Worry about too much oil, you can really make a mess if you put to much in. If you put to much it will blow your cap right off and shower your ride with oil. | ||

I agree with Cyclone....I did the same thing and put a bit to much oil in and it did blow off the oil cap. Scared my b/c I felt something bang against my seat while I was riding. I pulled over to find the cap off. | ||

the first Buell-specific tool I bought was a cheap turkey baster -- do NOT put it back in the kitchen after siphoning off the extra oil from the tank -- learn from my mistake, and go on to make new one's of your own! | ||

I have a funny story, After I had owned my S1 for the first season I stored it in the garage behind my house. Well in April when I took it out I did something real stupid. It was my first dry sump engine and of course after sitting all winter the oil bleed past the pump into the sump of the engine. I did not bother to run the bike before checking the oil, I topped up the oil and rode it to the HD retailer for a pre-season check and to have the motor thunderstormed. Well, when I went to pick up the bike he was not very happy. He too the seat off while the engine was running and all of a sudden POP. The oil cap shot into the air, oil everywhere.....hahahahaha He told me he was going to consider charging for clean up time!!!!!!but never. From now on I always check start the engine before checking the oil. | ||

Yes; DO worry about it. If the oil level rises above the level of your vent line, you in essence seal it off and therefore have no tank vent! At high speeds you are pressurizing your little plastic tank faster than the pressure can bleed off around the fill cap. Insert your own end to this story. I got lucky and just ended up squeezing oil trough the fitting seals and made a mess of the top of my tank, etc, but I'm sure it coulda been worse. |
