For all you guys that really know the buells, cause I dont. a 1997 S1 lightning with under 200 miles, whats it worth? It supposedly has stuff done to it, like different internals I am told.(pistons, head work , whatever else) Does this decrease or increase value?Anything I might look for to check if it truly has under 200 miles. Anyone know what brand of tire was on them from factory?

Probably in the 4 to 5K range, depending on *what* was done, whodunnit, and if they dunnit right.

Last year my girlfriend got a SPOTLESS 98 S1 with 1500 miles on it for $4,800. Tubers are bargins for buyers, dumfounding for sellers. All around great motorcycles.

what is the reasoning for switching to a chain?
i've never owned a belt bike.

Some people say that chains are more durable, there are some people who have broken belts due to rocks and etc getting lodged between the belt and sprocket. My personal experience is that belts are very durable, quieter, and require less (read: No) maintenance.
For track use chains are maybe better because you can switch sprocket sizes fast.
Also, on some Tubers, it is a real pain to replace a broken belt.

It's really odd that without riding it, the previous owner swithched so much stuff. I can understand maybe a seasoned Bueller going for Thunderstorm heads out of the box. But I don't think they came silver. The Sportster air cleaner is a question too.
That's kind of the thing about a Buell, Make it what YOU want. As long as it hasn't been butchered up too much by stupid Pep Boys type of aftermarket stuff it can be remade to all you wanted. They look like stock tires but who knows for sure. It's worth what sombody will pay for it, and that is the bottom line. Personally, Yellow is not my color but $4,500 seems about right by the pic and the low miles.IMHO

well they had all the recalls done, at least the shock recall... that is a good sign... have you taken it out for a spin? looks like good shape, but just one pic can't tell too much...

blackbelt, yeah I am waiting on more pics. I will post them. bike is 5 hours away from me and after seeing more pics I will know if I want to bother with it.
- oh yeah, I am told that the motor went out to "powerstroke"( i think thats right) in California and some known guy ( i forget the name) did engine work and I am told it has over 30 hp from stock , the guy said "it should be up around 97hp". it has steering stabilizer, reverse shifting.

Belts and pulleys are better than chains and sprockets from a cost/longevity basis unless you have one go south on you in B.F. Egypt. Then you will wish you had a chain as you can do your own roadside repair in minutes.

Last year a bunch of BWB'ers were working on a field fix for a broken belt but obviously nothing has come of it.

Would like to see Buell come out with either a repair kit or a replacement belt safely packaged small enough to pack on a bike as an emergency repair system.

To this day, the belt drive is the reason I don't venture far from Harley/Buell dealers on a trip and I have an X1 where the belt is easily replaceable, just not convenient to carry along in a tank or tail bag.

I just swapped the belt on my '99 S3 with 50,000mi. on it. Not because I needed too, but I figured that 50k was enough.
In those 50kmi. I've ridden to Colorado 2x, Milwaukee 2x, New England, Newfoundland, Phoenix and Northern Minnesota. Don't let fear of a belt breaking keep you from the pleasures that await you and a great trip.

Ray, I guess that photo is the most recent. the guy has it at 4500 FIRM. the guy owns a dealership and supposedly went to the track once in a while with his buddies that were in some sort of racing team, thats why the bike is modded with no miles.

Hi Mike...

I am familiar with your travels and those of others from the BWB and they are commendable concerning belt wear.

FYI, I prefer to ride alone for the solitude and adventure. It's not that I am antisocial, I just don't care for group dynamics and like to ride at my pace. I also do not have access to a trailer or pick up truck so a One Way Rental Truck or a Towing Service is my only way home or to a dealer. Translation: Time and dollars out of my pocket.

I just like the security of being able to fix a minor problem on the road. You have to admit that threading on a chain with a master link or putting on a Belt Fix-It Kit or Temporary belt would be a lot easier and more convenient. Granted, an optional centerstand on my X1 would help matters greatly as well.

As I already mentioned, belts and pulleys last longer than chains and sprockets and require less maintenance. In my mind, the only downside to a belt is the roadside failure in BF Egypt.

So, if Buell would design and sell a Belt Fix-It Kit or a Temporary Replacement Belt that packs in a tank or tail bag and will enable me to limp a few hundred miles to a dealer, I would be a very happy camper.

Lastly, I don't think it is wrong to assume a number of folks who chose not to buy a Buell used the broken belt issue as a primary reason for their decision.

Heck, I would think the majority of us have witnessed belts just dropping off both Buell's and Harley's in various parades around the country. I know I have seen at least a dozen do that here in Wisconsin over the last five years.

Still don't understand the air cleaner, but everybody has their own preference.
Go for it. You can always get most, if not all of your money back. BE AWARE, most track bikes don't run with a speedo so the miles are doubtful. Look for scrapes on the rear axle threads. If it's been down, most of the time, people will restore the threads rather than replace the axle. Stuff drilled for lockwire is also a giveaway. If it's fully drilled (axles, caliper, shoe retaining, trans drain bolt)it looses value as is has been run hard and long. Still doesn't mean it was abused, just not the virgin you may think.
