I may be making a trip over to Ireland later this year. Can anyone tell me about renting a bike there?

Is it even feasible cost wise (I only plan to rent for a day)? Does an american drivers license work? Is renting a bike common?

And th e big one if you could only ride for one day there, where would you go?

Not sure myself but you could try asking the HD dealer in Dublin or trying to get hold of Mark in Ireland.

You didn't say where you were heading in Ireland?

I don't know about renting motorcycles there. When I was there in November 2004, I could count the number of motorcycles that I saw on one hand. I would highly recommend driving to the Cliffs of Moher if you acquire a motorcycle.

Rocket
details are still forming. It looks like I'll be in Dublin for 2 days and the rest of the time will be along the southern side of the country.

Make of the bike is unimportant, actually I'd be looking for something that could be ridden 2 up. Also I'd need to rent gear. But that said, I'll try checking with Harley in Dublin

Pa thanks for the pics, thats some awesome scenery.

My wife and I bicycled Ireland a bunch of years ago, I would recommend ring of Kerry and Dingle penninsula , also cliffs of Moher as pa_xb9sx said, there is something like the irish version of the badlands north of the cliffs but I can't remember the name, oh and you have to go over Connor's pass . Funny I remember seeing lots of motorcycles there also, whether they were rentals or not I have no idea. hmmm, about all I found when I did a google search was this;

Mbsween: As of three years ago you could not rent a motorcycle anywhere in Ireland... I know because I tried!

A friend and I flew to London, rented motorcycles there, rode across Wales (beautiful countryside) and hopped on a ferry to Ireland... We spent over a week riding motorcycles all across Ireland (mainly on the west coast) before returning to London... It was one of the most amazing trips I've ever taken!

The rules regarding motorcycle rentals may have changed since then, so don't give up trying! You may want to have an alternate plan, however.

I was planning to do the same (reservations at Madrid HD were already made) for my trip to Barcelona next month, but I won't be ready to ride by then. Have a great trip and hope it works out, totally looking forward to seeing pics from it : )

Matt:

If you don't have any luck, drop me a note. I have a good friend from Ireland who produced the Guggenheim Motorcycle event. I'll be he could get us the info.

Seems like there was an article in Rider magazine a coupla years ago about renting a bike and riding in Ireland. I do believe they may have rented in England and ferried across. Anybody have back issues?

Whoops, I believe I was remembering a column from Peter Egan's book, which I read a year or so ago...not a Rider article. Unfortunately the column was written in 1985, so any info therein may be just a tad dated. BTW, he borrowed a bike from a friend in England and ferried over.

Matt: I just thought of something: try looking in Northern Ireland... It's technically part of the UK, so the rules are a little different, but Belfast is only a hundred miles from Dublin...

My friend and I didn't want to go that far north, so we just got our bikes from Raceways in London... but i recall hearing about bikes for rent in Belfast.

I have no idea how old this link is, but it might help: http://www.iol.ie/~maglink/mbrent.htm

As far as I know there is still no rental bikes available and I don't think N Ireland will do them also, its down to the fact of horrendous insurance costs. The Harley dealer, Motorcycle City, IIRC in Dublin might be able to clarify things better though. Beware though, the roads in Ireland are sometimes bordering on third world conditions if off the beaten track. A big trailie is one of the best bets....also the standard of driving is somewhat lacking, so beware and get to the pub early on and stay there!! Don't forget Ireland is now 'No Smoking'in all work places, so all the craic now occurs outside the pub doors.
