Went to fire up my 2000 M2...Put new plugs in cause wouldn't start..(old plugs pretty fowled)...noticed bolt missing.. Got shop owners manual and couldn't find what bolt was. Bike still not starting.. Anyone tell me what's missing (part #)..and would it effect my bike not starting.? .. Bike stored in heated garage all winter....and was started a couple of times during winter.

Head temp sensor Relocated in 00 or 01 to the center of the head.

All heads were tapped, did the M2 get it installed?

By the way... it's the rear cylinder...the front cylinder doesn't have a place where a 3rd bolt would go...

the rear cylinder runs hotter. that's why they placed it there.

Josh... with it not being used for a Head Temp Sensor.. shouldn't the tapped area be plugged...and if left unplugged..would it create an adverse situation?

If the area opens into the combustion chamber, then you would loose all compression through that hole for that cylinder on every stroke.

Wychedflesh... exactly what I was thinking...but does anybody know whether or not it opens into the combustion chamber...and does anyone know if there is a stock plug (w/Buell part #) that's suppose to fit in that empty threaded hole. ???

you would be able to tell if it opens to the combustion chamber if you put your finger over the hole while cranking it, you will either feel air move or get a shock.

I;m pretty sure that it doesn't extend into the combustion chamber. The torque on the bolt was pretty minimal. (on a 01 x1)

Pretty easy test, put your finger over the hole and hit the starter. You'll feel/hear the air coming out if it the hole goes through.

The other thing to note is that the hole is clean. If it went to the combustion chamber there would be all kinds of residue around the whole and all over that part of the head

Don't worry about that hole, my '00 M2 has the hole also. For a temp sensor as noted, not installed on some bikes as noted, nothing to do with why your bike isn't starting.

Try bypassing your sidestand switch, ensure your kill switch is off, pull in the clutch, pull out the enrichener, ensure you have fresh gas in the tank, try it again, report back with the results.

Benmarc: That is how rear cylinders of 2KM2s are looking.
To be sure, I ran to the garage: To give proof and make a picture would be a waste of time, because my rear cylinder is looking exactly like your`s: With a clean and fresh, threaded, hole.

The T-storm equipped M2's didn't use that hole until 2001, and by then it had moved inboard. 2001/2002 ignitions have connectors like the FI ECMs, and have a head temp sensor input to cause it to skip ignition cycles when the engine was overheated. 1999/2000 M2 ignitions use the same old 8 pin deutsch connector as the 98 and before carbed Buells, no head temp sensor input.

This is probably old news but, yes all the T-storm M2's have the threaded hole, no, it doesn't extend into the chamber, and no, nothing needs to be in it. Fire it up and ride.

in case anyone was thinking about it....

dont cover/plug an open spark plug hole with your finger and crank the engine

during the firing stroke it will create suction and give you a nasty hicky on your finger, when it pulls the skin in, the threads in the head can possibly break skin

BIG OUCH
