Rocket, Thanks for the offer. Be straight with me. In the six years that I've been coming to this site, I've seen you cycle from good bloke, to arsehole, twice. This looks like the start of a third round. I hope you understand my scepticism when I see this olive branch being offered. I've got a copy of the book here somewhere. I can probably still find the page number |

As far as I understand (may not be far at all) the cost of bringing an assistance vehicle would be: Vehicle: 1700 Euro Per assistant: 7900 Euro Add to that: - support vehicle itself - transportation of personel to/from - fuel for support vehicle - food/tenting/lodging - possible repair etc. So, we'd need an old, but reliable, Toyota Landcruiser - diesel if possible, camping & cooking gear, sun block , quick pitch awnings, tools, spares ... We'd need to know what the possibilities for replenishing supplies would be. Peter - please don't take this the wrong way - I'm just having fun with a bit of brain storming. I wouldn't dream of imposing uninvited on your dream adventure - even if I had the time and $$. If your dream is doing this on your own, just say the word and let us know if we can be of assistance in other ways. Meanwhile it's fun to play "what if" Henrik |

Henrik, Good news! I just saved some money..... The "- food/tenting/lodging" is included in the €7900 Actually I'm overwhelmed that people are even considering wanting to help. I hadn't considered it at all because I'm going to end up with the bum out of my trousers, even with sponsorship, just to get myself there. I'd really love to have company, especially if it's with friends I've made here. And thank you for even considering it, seriously. I'm a bit scared though, that if you guys do get into full swing with coming along, what happens if my doorknocking for sponsorship hasn't paid dividends in time? I'd really hate to be the cause of wasted effort on your behalf. If I don't get there, then I don't get there and I'll just have to try even harder next year... but I'm only inconveniencing myself then. |

Guys the link i posted above has more than just Charlie and Dave's account of the race... It also has an account from one of their support guys, he was the driver for their support vehicle and the mechanics... SO,,,,as Firemanjim said "be afraid" and forewarned. this race is THE marathon of ALL marathons |

Cool! I just found this pic from #29, Eric Verhoef's bike. It shows the GPS in place. The three red arrows are a new system (Sentinel) from this year, which automatically warns riders when a car is coming near them.

GPS? You mean they don't just paint a big black stripe on the course for you to follow? Sounds uncivilized to me... rt |

>>>Meanwhile it's fun to play "what if" Great ideas and actions are born of dreams and "what if" thinking. Peter has the talent to do this. We need to learn more. I am confident that we are all prepared to do all we can. Please, let's continue this "what if" and see what gels. Dates please. FMJH: mark that "C Note", I intend to hold you to it. Court |

Rocket, Please translate. What is "pisstaking"? I mean I know I often will say something like "I gotta go take a pizz" but that doesn't fit too well with what I think you are trying to communicate. |

Peter, I'm in for anything that I can help with if you want to put together a full blown effort. I haven't made plans for next year so I'd be tickled to fly to Europe and help the good doctor with anything logistical. And it goes without saying sponsor dollars are also available if this takes off. Rocket, It's good to see you back here my friend. I for one understand the sentiments of your statement and applaud your intent. |

Mike, I guess when they hear an American say that they are giving someone shyte, it sounds similarly confusing. LOL. I've certainly taken my fair share of shyte through the years, and given it too. |

You guys are amazing! All I can say is thank you from the bottom of my heart. Really. Your generosity blows me away. With all the goodwill being shown to me here, I guess I'd be a pretty heartless bastard not to try and mend some fences. If you still have my email address Sean, please drop me a line and we'll see if we can sort ourselves out. |

Rocket, I saved a spot on the shelf right next to the piston Captain Pete gave me. I have compilation CD I owe you that I'll send ASAP. BTW, I heard you changed your address... ping me at my e-mail with your new one. FMJ, does that mean we might be on an African adventure together? Do you think they have enough beer for both of us? Can the Dakar survive an appearance by Fireman Jim? |

FYI: This is now an official (it's on the internet ain't it) BadWeB sanctioned support effort. Peter has agreed to festoon himself, his bike and his big hairy brass ones with BadWeB logos in this historic effort. Not sure what kind of interest that might generate for us, but he's all for it, so who are we to object? Peter is also enthused about this 2006 charter effort being just the beginning of more and greater Dakar challenges in the future, including intentions that he and his heavily alloyed parts take on the challenge aboard a Buell based Dakar machine. He'll also keep us intimately (sounds scary, ain't really) apprised of goings-on related to achieving his dream of doing Dakar. Different in every sense? Damn straight! Or is that "twisted"? WOOHOOOO! This is gonna be epic and Peter is going to allow us to ride along with him! Too cool! Peter, if I've mispoke just slap me back into place. I've gone ahead and sent the BadWeB logo artwork to your local tatoo parlor. They said that for your sake on the trip home you should wear loose fitting shorts. |

Hey y'all. There hasn't been much discussion going on here for a while for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the organisers still haven't released the details for Dakar 2006. Yesterday I was told it will happen on May 15. Secondly, as it being tied in with BadWeb was based on a Blast powered effort the following year, it may not be possible. There are very strong rumours kicking around Europe that the motorcycle capacity will be dropped to a max of 450cc. It looked like it might happen for 2006, but the latest rumours say they've put it off. It is coming though, which will make a Blast engine ineligible. Pity. That means I'm going back to the hat-in-my-hand approach, and door knocking every business I can over here Thanks for the offers of help. It meant a lot to me. If anyone still has the idea that they'd like to follow along (like that lunatic Henrik ) you're more than welcome. Seriously. Doing this with friends would be great. Please email me at petermoltmann(at)hotmail(dot)com if you're still interested. |
