Here's the Ducati operation:

These guys spent more time looking at the telemetry on the screens than they did looking at the bikes themselves.

Armando_Ferrer
This kid had a pretty good Rookie experience at Daytona. He's 16 year old Armando Ferrer from Venezuela. His team hired Michael Barnes/Prieto Racing for the weekend, in part to have Michael help Armando and his brother with racing at Daytona and AMA racing in general.

He did really well in the Supersport race, he was running 19th or so, but he mistook the white flag for the checkers and pulled into the pits one lap too early!!! I was in the pits with his dad watching the Speedchannel live feed when his dad suddenly saw his son pull in to soon and got up and ran to his pit to tell him to go out for one more lap! DOH!

He did much better in the 200 on Saturday, finishing 15th.

According to Armando they plan on doing the whole AMA season this year along with some CCS events. $$$$$$$

Ex Factory HD VR1000 Rider Mike Smith being interviewed by AMA Track announcer Richard Chambers. Mike made a comment about how the "Superstock" Yamaha he was riding that day would have "blown the paint off" his VR1000 Superbike. Ouch.

Who says you have to hang out at Main Street to see some unique chopper's.

Here's one I found in the Paddock at the Speedway, featuring a Suzuki SV1000 engine:

Hey.....there's breaking news for ya. A state of the art Yamaha will blow the paint off a 10 year old VR. Jot that down Freddo, put it in the report to HQ.

: )

Really.....I'm struggling to see where that comment does anything but taunt the new (most folks on Badweb had never ridden a motorcycle when the VR was racing) folks here.

The VR was no match for a 1995 Yamaha, I assure you it'd be no match for a 2005. No unrelated to the reason HD left ... tail between their legs.

The new R1 would blow the paint off most any ten year old AMA Superbike. Back then they were racing 750cc IL4's.

Had a great time talking racing with you in Daytona JQ. Thanks for posting your pics. I'll try to get some of mine posted soon too.

Court,

I'm only reporting what Mike Smith said, actually that's why I took the picture right after he had made that comment to Mr. Chambers. I figured that would get a reaction from somebody here.

Interestingly, he was making the same exact point you made about how much bikes have developed since he was a Factory Superbike Rider. He compared the new bikes to the VR without any prompting from anybody, so if he thought it was relevant or newsworthy enough to mention, that's good enough for me, he rode the bikes. I just happened to be near them in the pits when he said it, but anybody at the speedway listening to the announcers would have also heard it.

Blake,
That was fun, we'll have to do it again.

Here's a question for the masses though. Which would you rather have placed in your garage, a new R1 or a VR1000?

For me, I'll have the VR1000 please. : )

Dana,

yes that was Nicky, remember he was also at the Dirt Track Race on Thursday night. The announcer mentioned that he was up in where he was and he wanted to talk to him.

2wf.com has a picture of him from daytona on their website:
Nicky Hayden

Blake, I would also rather have a VR1000, but HD didn't see fit to sell it in the here, since the AMA let them slide and claim that it was street legal somewhere (Poland) so it could raced somewhere here.
