It's too bad that one bad apple gives the whole profession a bad name. Now all those people that hate cops and think they're all corrupt are going to have more ammunition.

Tell me about it. I start the academy in July. I hope I never become one of those ahole cops but after years of dealing with scumbags on a daily basis you never know, my town just fired in this month 3 Sgts for corruption and demoted 1 sgt back to patrol.

that is some disturbing sh*t, i have an organ donor stamp on my license and those articles are downright terrifying! being an organ donor to me is an attempt to save somebody's life if i die, but i sure as hell don't want my life cut short due to some idiots opinion on motorcyclists. i've never believed all the horror stories i've heard about organ donors having a decreased chance of survival in an emergency room. however all it takes is one goofball to make it harder for you to survive an accident if he/she (cop, call taker, dr., nurse etc.) don't like bikers. when i read articles like this i seriously consider taking my name off the donor list and it's a damb shame.

That article about Detroit is due to the recent vote on the helmet law in this state.

I think it is kinda harsh but hey it was your "choice" not to wear a helmet.

I think if Dickerson read the Hurt report as well as recent statistics, he'd realize he's not advocating a motorcyclist's "right to death" but rather an automobile driver's "right to manslaughter".

State police said the dismissive answer by Trooper Robert Peasley did not affect the response time

If it took THREE calls to get help I would say it affected the response time.

Aren't officers sworn to SERVE and PROTECT???
He should have been fired for dereliction of duty. Forget the 15 days without pay let him find another job.

I found some contact information that could be useful, just in case you would like to express how you feel about the unfortunate event. snipped from another site:

>>>>>>>>>>>
Here is the e-mail for the attorney general of Connecticut. His name is Richard Blumenthal.

attorney.general@po.state.ct.us

The Executive director of Police Officer Standards & Training Council (Connecticut Police Academy) is Thomas E. Flaherty. His phone number is 203-238-6505 and his e-mail is: ThomasE.Flaherty@po.state.ct.us

There is a list of the Chief Law Enforcement officers for the entire state at: http://www.post.state.ct.us/ChiefsMailList.htm

The Commissioner of Public Safety for Connecticut is Leonard C. Boyle. He does not list his phone number or e-mail, but the general e-mail for his office is DPS.Feedback@po.state.ct.us

Colonel Edward J. Lynch is The Deputy Commissioner, Division of State Police

His contact info is:

Colonel Edward J. Lynch
Deputy Commissioner
Division of State Police
1111 Country Club Road
Middletown, Connecticut 06457-9294
Telephone: (860) 685-8441 Fax: (860) 685-8354
>>>>>>>>>>>>

As usual, in order to make an impression and not be labeled "luny", be courteous and precise in expressing your concern, that a police officer, who has shown such disdain and disrespect for the people that he has sworn to serve and protect, is allowed to continue to serve.

quote:

Meanwhile, the state police union tells us Trooper Peasley is remorseful for his comments but the union says the discipline is inappropriate and harsh.

If anyone chooses to express comments to the State Police, they may also wish to contact the State Police Union as well.

And to think we just about put to rest a different police bashing thread and now this pops up.

Sad.

I got this back from Flaherty...

"Dear Mr. Hann,

This Agency is a separate agency from the Department of Public Safety and The Connecticut State Police Department. The Police Officer Standards and Training Council only has statutory authority to enforce standards for Municipal Police agencies. I have passed your comments on to Lt. Carl Schultz who is the commanding officer of the Connecticut State Police Academy.

Chief Thomas E. Flaherty

Executive Director

POSTC"

This just sent off to Mr. Dickerson, Detroit Free Press:

>>>>>>>>>>>>>
One would think a journalist would research the topic of his article in order to present an intelligent, fact based view. It appears that the same standards do not apply to columnists?

A minimum of insight into motorcycle riding and accidents would have revealed that the majority of accidents involving serious bodily injury to the rider are caused by inattentive drivers of automobiles.

To insinuate that injured motorcyclists should be refused medical assistance based on their choice of transportation is simply outrageous.

It is my hope, that the ER physician who will be treating you, when your unhealthy living ends up causing you a cardiovascular emergency, have a different view of "who deserves what" than you do.

Sincerely

Henrik Bo Pedersen, M.D.

And mine...

"You sit there at your desk writing words that indicate you haven’t got a clue. You live and sleep in your “house box”, get up and hop into your “transportation box” and then get to work, and work all day in your “work box”. You probably sit in a cubicle don’t you? At no point do you ever consider that some people aren’t satisfied with what you have settled for. You see us as “risk takers”.

“And why not require donorcyclists to sign papers declining extraordinary lifesaving measures, so that deserving organ recipients aren't kept waiting unnecessarily?”

So in your opinion, us “donor-cyclists” are something less than a deserving organ recipient? Why is that? Just how much less? Why should someone decide that because I enjoy my freedom and enjoy being in the wind that I’m less than anyone else? Shouldn’t I be judged based upon my personality, honor, integrity and other virtues that I may or may not have?

Who are you? Are YOU better than me? Are YOU an organ donor?

Do you want to know what I think? So what, I’ll tell you anyway (because I have the right to). I think you decided that your job in its current form is a dead end, you’re in a rut and bored with life, so you decided to strike at a group of people that could make you famous. Maybe you saw a person on a motorcycle do something you didn’t like? Maybe you saw someone on a motorcycle do something you DID like, but it made you feel inferior. I’m betting on the latter myself…

I think you should buy a motorcycle. It’s good therapy.

Oh and BTW… I obviously don’t agree with what you say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it. What’s more… If I get the chance, I won’t let you die on the side of the road. "

I must admit that I have ridden the bike to the therapist. Wait... I was at the therapist because my (now ex) wife wasn't happy with things and she asked me to go. Maby that doesn't count.

I have ridden my motorcycle to my shrinks office. I find sitting on it while it warms up in the morning centers me for the rest of the day. I have been so out of balance since it stopped running a weeks ago.
Henrik and M1 make good points and I can imagine many more have written to these individuals and agencies outlining that they feel similarly. The unfortunate fact remains that there are so many more cagers in the world then us; and so many of them are envious of the lifestyle our mode of transportation insinuates (and IMHO provides.)
I plan to forward this link to many of my counterparts in the Utah area who are, how to put it gently, outspoken people.

Henrik,
The article said he was a columnist, not a journalist. I think that's similar to the distinction between talk-show host and news anchor.

The problem with morons like that Mr. Dickerson is that they're so good at getting other morons to believe what they have to say.

I'm really glad that just because I apparently chose to be hit from behind by someone in a car, who fled and left me to die by the side of the road, no one decided I wasn't fit to live. I died several times, in the ambulance and in the hospital, but I'm still here, and I can't wait to get back on a bike. I know that I'm a better, more careful rider than many people are drivers.

Lets just enjoy what we have while we have it. I just worry that the ignorant majority will some day get a chance to vote on some outlandish "bill" that some idiot decided to gain recognition for. This happens all the time in the wonderful state of California. The "public" votes on a dollar fair increase on the bridges that they never drive on. We, the daily commuters pay for what the state cannot budget correctly. I just pray it never starts to infringe on my right to do as I please.
