...in the North Georgia mountains during the Stone Mountain Buell demo ride. I couldn't believe how generous he was with his time. He spoke with me for half and hour in subjects ranging from guitars to the merits of different CAD programs. I also got him to sign my bike. It was an incredible day and the best part is, I get to do the same thing tomorrow.

What a weekend!

So which CAD program does Erik prefer?
I'll start studying it now so I can get a job with Buell....

I mentioned that I had used SolidWorks on previous projects and was under the impression that Buell used it for solid modeling. He informed me that they were implementing Think3, a modeling program I am unfamiliar with. He went into depth about the advantages it had with complex surface contours, but also said it was more time consuming to use.

I was absolutely amazed that he spoke with me about his racing career, his time working for Harley, and the absolute surprise he felt when the Company approached him about a partnership. He said it literally came out of the blue. We also had a really good conversation about the technology his motorcycles use, but he would not even hint as to what was coming in the future.

To top it off, we spent about 10 minutes just talking about guitars. He talked about his Strat and I talked about my Tele. Heh, heh, we both ride Buells and we both play Fenders.

The best part was when he autographed my M2. Man, what a day...

Oh, BTW. Special thanks to Stone Mountain Buell and their general manager Cameron (Clown) for making this great day possible. They worked really hard to pull this off. I can't wait to do it again tomorrow!!!

You should have put him in a headlock!

The future?...I'll tell you what's in the future...a VHT Tele with Humbuckers.

I'll pass on the Tele with humbuckers. The reason I like Teles and Strats is the bright and twangy sound of the single coils. Fender has never really made good sounding humbuckers, and I think Gibsons sound too dark and muddy, they don't have enough treble. I spent twenty years on the road playing lead guitar in blues, rock, and country bands, and I may not have tried them all, but I've tried, and owned most of them, and in that time I figured out what I prefer. I have three Teles, one being a G&L Asat Leo Fender sig model.

DJ, I'm surprised they are still using think3 to tell you the truth. What I've heard was Think3 has some serious problems on very large assemblies, which an XB is. It is a far better at complex surface models than Solidworks is though. Maybe they are using Think3 for part design, and still using Pro/E for their assemblies?

When we were shopping for a new mold design tool, I looked at Think3, but it suffered the same problems that Delcam Powershape did, and that being large assemblies. Which is why we ended up with VX. VX has awesome performance with large assemblies, and the complex surface modeling of Think3, and PowerShape, and at a far cheaper price. But IMHO, PowerShape is still by far the easiest, and most capable complex surface modeler available.

The pricing model used to also be a bit screwy on think3. You actually RENTED the software. If you quit maintanance, it's useless. But I think that they have changed this practice in favor of a standard pricing structure recently.

It was a fun product to use though.

Think3's 2D exports also suck, but the 3D is quite good. The last Buell part we quoted came in as a perfect solid : )

Vegasbueller is a harmonic distortion junkie, I see. And, as Seinfeld would say, "not that there is anything wrong with that!"

I hope you men wear earplugs when you ride, it would be a shame to loose your music.

Hey Dan... I am just a fan of vaccum tube sound. I haven'y played in over 20 years, and don't even own a tube amp now. But... I do own a truckload of old tube radios, and I love the "warmth" that you get with tubes. Someday, I'll own another Fender tube amp to play with.
And sadly enough... I am losing my hearing more all the time. I wear earplugs almost anytime I ride, and always at work. Not much I can do but enjoy it while I have it.

Yes it was a wonderful weekend!!!!

Eric is a very down to earth guy. Got some great pics of him playing guitar with one of the guys from our group and it was cool to listen to his motorcycle tales. I have so much to say about all that I don't even know where to start. It was awesome meeting the man that designed the bike I ride that's for sure!!
I dyed my plastic like Odie and Eric thought that was really cool, I don't think he'd seen dyed bikes before. But then again who has???

I too got him to sign my bike, I think most of the 3%er's had him sign their bikes.
It's all a bit of a blur this morning but a good blur .

The weather was perfect!!! We had over 200 people test ride Buell's this weekend in the twisties. Some on more than one bike. The last number I heard was right at 400 test rides out for the whole weekend, but still waiting for a final count.

Hopefully Eric will make it next year as well and we can make this an annual event!!!

The final count was 375 total demo rides. We had an incredible weekend. This is going to be an annual event. I met so many great people. One of the best quotes after Erik took a bike out for a ride was "Man, I'd love these bikes even if I didn't build them" Many more stories to come.

Topic creep, I know! I play my Teles through a pre-CBS Fender Blackface Super Reverb, has all the tube sound you'd ever want, fat and warm. I recently picked an old Aims tube head, also from the '60s and also running 4 10", except in a separate enclosure. It sounds more edgy than the Super, which is almost sweet. It sounds more like an old Marshall 50W. It works really good for my Rickenbacker 481.

Just to stay on topic, I'd love to meet Erik. I have talked to Willie G and the retiring Jeff Blumstien, way back in around 1981.

I just rolled into SC with ~340 miles on the trip odo since I left Dahlonega this morning (~30 miles of that being due to a wrong turn!). Weather was cold all day but no rain thankfully.

It really was a great weekend. I met a few BadWebbers- got to talk to Glitch and a couple of the other guys. Talked to Erik for about 5 minutes. Rode some great twisty roads (got to tag along with Erik and crew for part of a ride). And last but not least, got to help change the broken rear engine mount on a friend-of-a-friend's XB9S (THAT's a whole 'nother story).

My old S3 ran flawlessly all weekend (about 800 miles worth). All in all, it couldn't have been much better.

I have just one question- when does the planning for 2006 March Badness start?

Could we make it after the end of MAY 2006? I should be back home by then... Ok, I understand if you can't arrange it around my schedule, but man, that was the best time I've had in a long time. If it weren't for my buddy who just got back and was only in town for the weekend, I'd have stayed all weekend at TWO... Maybe next time.

kudos to stone mountain and granite city h-ds, cameron, chris and all the 3%r's who dedicated themselves to ensuring everything went as great as it could get this weekend. a special thanks to ERIK BUELL for donating his time so willingly to all who wished to meet him. i was super impressed. by the way, he wore a yellow Buell vanson jacket like mine (except he signed mine!) on his ride and i was told by jim (motor mount) that Erik rocks in the twisties. back in louisiana with the memory of all the buellers i met. thanks again, and ride safe.

I once had an old Marshall tube amp. I got it for free and thought it was worthless. I didn't know any better. I was trying to play guitar at that time and that amp stopped working. I tried to fix it myself, trashed it and dumped it.

I should have had it fixed by a pro and saved that thing. I'm such a barbarian. Please kill me.

I see everyone is hinting around to it. I'll post when I get school straightened back out today, still a bit groggie from the 1100 miles we rode round trip. Eric may have rocked in the twisties, but Cameron and Stone Mountain HD were the real heroes of the weekend! Without them I'd still be camping! More to come.
