Heading up there for a week in January. I say that Mike's Famous Harley Davidson is located along the way and it indicates they have some type of museum, but their website indicates it is closed for renovation. I won't be taking the bike up (still too cold).

You're going in January? As in next January?

I've always liked Newport, and try to get up there every now and again, even if to just sit by the water watch the boats and have a couple of beers.

There are lots of restaurants, bars, great scenery as you drive by the beaches and parks, lots of money (mansions yachts etc...). Narragansett Bay is real scenic.

Never been there in Janaury, but I bet it's a bit chilly. Enjoy.

I'm gonna disagree with you on the too cold part. I think april can be a fine time to ride, but I guess it depends on what you are used to. Aside form the most freakish snowstorms, April should be relatively mild. That being said, I don't know if I'd rely on a bike as my sole transportation for that time of year.

Ahhh...gotcha. Then I would recommend possibly a sail on the bay. I was going to recommend http://www.flyercatamaran.com/

but they are not open yet in April. However, I'm sure you can find someone who's running tours of the bay, and probably at off season prices too.

You can also do the mansion tours and see how the filthy rich (think vanderbilts) used to live.

There is also the cliff walk which is a nice excursion. http://www.cliffwalk.com/

I would recommend http://www.castlehillinn.com/ for a nice lunch and great views.

Let us know how your trip goes. I am due for a trip there too.

Steve

I had thought about checking out one of the mansion tours. I'm sure a bike trip through Rhode Island would be nice. I may also have to check out the cliffwalk.

I lived there for a year. The mansion tours are cool, There are some great places to eat and drink downtown on Thames St and on the water. Going for a sail is always a good idea there. The cool stuff doesn't kick off until the first weekend of June with ChowderFest.

Try http://www.gonewport.com/ for some ideas

Guess I'll be doing a lot of eating. Although, in all honesty, I'm not big into seafood, which I'm sure is the specialty in that area. Sorry, grew up the midwest (beef country).

the mansion are very nice. I like the the Black Pearl on Bannister's Wharf. The Clark Cooke House is very good to see and be seen kind of place. The Candy Store (next door to the Clark Cooke House) was/is a good bar.
There are a few bars and the like on Long Wharf, can't think of the names (this getting old isn't for sissies.)
Over by the cliff walk is a great fish and chip place that has the best stuffed quahogs in the world and I can't remember the name of that one either. Watch Hill is another cool viewing spot.
I used to like to ride down to Sakonnet Point in the old days (my old YDS2 Yamaha). Nice scenic ride with The Sakonnet winery along the way.

I grew up there. The Island has changed quite abit but if you explore and get off the main roads it is a very interesting place. There is the ten mile drive which will take you from Bellview Ave past a lot of the old mansions and to the coast. It also will bring you back to the city.
If you head out by the beaches from downtown you will see first beach (I learned to surf there)Gets crowded in the summer. them out to Second Beach in Middletown. Great beach to walk on. The point was a Navy Comm sta when I was a kid. also at second beach is purgatory rock. just off the beach is the Norman bird sanctuary. Further down the road (Depending which way you go) you come to an intersection Going thru that you are now on Indian Ave. This takes you out to Black point farm (where I grew up) Lots of great views of the water to your right. If you take a left on to Wapping lane you come to pudding rock on your right at the intersection. From there you can (left) double back to the beaches or (right) work your way back to the East Main Road. lots of old farms and stone walls (many more housing areas now though) Generally the east side of the Island is less crowded than the west. Almost two different worlds. The in spring weather can be great or wet and cold it is that time of the year. If you are willing to hunt for it thewre is lots to see and do there.

If you and the wife want a romantic dinner try The White Horse Tavern. It's the Fort Worth Boat Club arm to the sea.
