opportunity has knocked and i'm speechless-let me explain: recently a job has come up at the local multibrand motorcycle shop, it's a large used bike dealership owned by one of my wives old friends, the job is parts mgr/inventory/parts and accessory salesman. currently i am a purchasing agent/parts mgr/warehouse supervisor for a thriving swimming pool business and make a decent living at it. anyway the wages for the motorcycle place are pretty close to what i'm making and i've always wanted to work in the motorcycle industry. i know i can handle the parts/inventory portion of the business as i've been doing that for ten years. however, the general mgr at the bike shop was really concerned with the sales portion of the job(i have no professional experience in the motorcycle industry).that being said, i do know something about motorcycles (if you browse the kv enough you learn alot about bikes) i've been doing my own wrenching on mine and my wifes bike for years now and believe i know enough about bikes to handle this job. therefore to all you guys in the industry, what would you be looking to hear from a potential employ for such a position? i would think their bread and butter from that department would be hop-up items and accessories. so i would be selling primarily ecm, or ignition modules, free flow air filters, and exhausts, then maybe carbon fiber, lighting and turnsignals. i'm not sure what the general manager wants to hear maybe i'm wrong but i'm wondering if i talk about that kind of stuff in the interview will that get me in the door. please if you're in the industry or related, please give me your input. tell me what you'd be requiring for knowledge from me, thanks i know there's alot of people here that can help me. tripp

I was a manager at AutoZone. When we looked for potential employees there were a few things that sparked our interest and a few that sent the applicant on their way. The fact that someone does their own wrenching gave them a good advantage. They had knowledge of shortcuts, safety issues, tools needed, and usually had some patience. Very important for you, selling parts to two wheelers has different reprocutionssp? than selling to cagers. Young Joe Rocket comes in and wants to super Rocket size his brand new Busa, would your conscience let you do it? Does he(or she) seem mature enough to do handle it? Might kill themselves if not. That being said the first thing we passed on was the speed freaks looking for some weekend cash and a discount. We wanted a lifer who would represent the company as if he was selling parts to their own child. Be prepared to offer some knowledge on selling related items(ie-kid comes in for Oil filter. You would suggest oil, any applicable seals, tools needed, even an air filter. Our motto was WITTDJR. What It Takes To Do the Job Right. If a potential made it passed the first half, and had good input on selling, they usually got hired. You already in the sales category, convince them you know about working on MC's. Let us know how it goes.
