So yea, i have a 95 Buell S2 thunderbolt and read badweb almost daily and have had to get all of your opinions a few times and it was a life saver.

My Current situation is my battery will not charge, and the bike runs until it drains the battery. I followed the FSM instructions for testing both regulator and stator... here are what i found

(new battery)
Voltage when running ~ 12.3 V
Voltage when off ~ 12.3 V

Stator resistance.....

Resistance between both plugs going to primary = 2750 ohms

Resistance between one connector and battery ground = 2750 ohm

Resistance between the other connector and battery ground = nothing

so i do believe my stator is "grounded". can this be rectified or verified before i go pulling my primary, clutch, and whatnot and replacing my stator because i do believe i would be dissapointed if my stator was fine after all this. thanks for all the help in advance

Sounds to me like it is gone. When you do replace it I recommend you spend a few extra dollars and get the Acccell stator. Dennis Kirk sells them for about $100 and they come with a lifetime guarantee.

BTW,
Ever get down to San Antonio?

Do the updated main seal as well.
Oh, and verify/check/replace your chain tensioner to the updated one as well.

Open the primary inspection cover and give it the "nose" test.
You'll know if it's bad.
Peee U!

Follow Mikes advice. The crank seal is very easy to change with the stator off.
The seal is cheap.
Lots of info in the KV regarding it's replacement.

Good luck!

Brad

(Doncha just love them S2's!)

What Mike and Brad said...

Also, highly recommend that you clean up the metal where the stator wires go under the strap, and put a nice big blob of RTV in there. It'll stop some of the wire flex which I believe is a major cause of stator failures, especially when they fail at the junction from the stranded to solid wire joint.

If you don't have one, get one of these. It makes the job SOOO much easier. And do clean the mainshaft threads VERY well before applying the red loctite and torquing the nut.

The shop here pretty much sucks like most Buell shops do. I do all my own maintenence and have a well stocked garage. I come up to College Station about 2-3 times a year to run track days at Texas World Speedway. I usually camp at the track the night before.
