On saturday my wife and I picked up our new to us 2001 S3T and trailered her home.

Later that day we took a twenty minute ride just to try her out. I rode it ten minutes out, then we switched bikes and she rode it back. I wanted to ride it first to let her know what to expect.

I thought it was extremely comfortable (especially with the corbin seat. Although she shakes at idle (she is a buell after all), the bike tended to smooth out at speed. The handling was great and confidence inspiring. Power was more than enough than my wife will ever need (maybe). The only problem that both she and I noticed was a fairly constant slight hiccup when cruising at about 3000 rpms. I'm going to charge the battery fully, run a fresh tank of gas through, change the plugs, and if this doesn't solve the hiccup I'll take it to the dealer. The bike had been sitting for a while so I suspect stale gas and/or water in gas. AT only 1300 miles it hasn't been ridden much over the past 4 years or so.

The wife enjoyed it alot. It is quite a change from her Blast. She is looking forward to putting many miles on her this summer.

Nice. Only 1300 miles - that's good as new. How about a pic or 2? I'm working on a deal for a 2001 S3T. Hope the seller comes through. I'll know something in a day or 2. Can't wait. If I get it I'm flying to pick it up and ride to Bike Week.

Lunchbox,
Had the same problem with mine hiccupping, you need to get the race ECM. Cured the problem. Congrats hope you two enjoy the S3 as much as I enjoy mine.

Scooter - yeah, she looks practically just out of the showroom. Volcano Grey with black frame. She looks real sharp. I have to figure this pic thing out. Good luck on your potential deal.

Mower - thanks for the advice. How involved is the race ECM swap. Is it a plug and play deal? I guess what I'm asking is if just swapping the ECM will cure it without replacing the exhaust and modifying the intake and such.

Also, Is it possible that a dealer could maybe reprogram the stock ECM with maybe updated software? Has anybody heard of anything like that?

If I do go with the race ECM, what kind of dollars are we talking about?

thanks,
Steve

There are guys here that will be better informers than I am, but this will get you started until the smart people pipe in.
The Buell Race ECM is about $200. Installation is incredibly easy. You'll have to take it to the dealer to have the throttle position sensor reset (Seems like $50, but I'm really guessing here). Mine made it to the dealer without problem. May have even been a 30 mile ride between the swap and the TPS fix.
Unfortunately we don't have the option of reprogramming like some of the aftermarket stuff. Someone makes a programmable unit (PCIII?) that got poor results on this board elsewhere. Whether that's because it's hard to tune or too generic to adapt to a Buell I couldn't tell you.
Good Luck. It definitely helped mine. I at least knew going in it was an extra few hundred that was going to be spent. Hopefully you won't be turned off by the additional cost.
Welcome to the world of Buell!

Steve,
I also bought mine with about 1300 miles on it. It had a V & H pipe and a forcewinder intake on it already. Before I purchased it, I posted on this site what upgrades I would need, and race ECM was the number one item most people suggested. I waited a half a year to do it and it did make a difference, most noticeably when just cruising between 40 and 60. I always said it felt like it would stumble slightly. If I remember correctly it was about $150 for the ecm and a half hour time for them to hook it up to their scanilizer( about 37.50)

I have to agree with everyone else, the Race ECM is the way to go.

Thanks for the advice. When the snow melts we'll be off for a trip to the dealer.

Chuck the exhaust and paper air filter on Keith's old bike while you're at it.

Hey Steve, good to hear from you again.

Are you suggesting the Buell race filter or something like it (if there is such an animal)?

I don't know if I could talk the wife into a new exhaust, since she enjoyed the quiet stock muffler compared to her Kerker equipped Blast.

Stop! If the "hiccup" you are seeing is stumble/starvation when cruising at a steady 3000 rpm's for long distances, you have a clogged injector. May be gummed up from sitting for 4 years with so few miles on the clock.

Run some injector cleaner through with a few tanks of new fuel first before you invest in a bunch of parts that won't cure the problem.

AdaleB - I will definitely go that route with some techron before I start replacing parts.
