Hey
I bought a 98 Cyclone last week. Now I have my 99 X1 and the Cyclone.Question about the engine. Is the engine just a stock Sportster motor? Sure is slower than my X1. I like the riding position more on the M2.Need more speed.

I put this together for a some guys who were looking for donor bikes for building Mutant Buell Choppers. I believe it is accurate.

Tube models:
96-98 S1's 91HP
97-98 M2's 83 HP
98 S1W 101 HP
99-02 M2's 91 HP
99-02 X1's 101 HP
98-02 S3's 101 HP

All M2's use stock D grind sportster cams (better torque/less HP)
97-98 Lightning heads
99-02 Thunderstorm heads

All S1's, S1W's, S3's and X1's use Lightning cams (more HP/less TQ)
S1's have Lightning heads
S1W's, S3's and X1's have Thunderstorm heads

99-02 X1's and S3's are fuel injected

Heres another few tips, be sure to give them to *everyone* looking to build Buell based choppers.

1) Permenantly seperating any tube framer engine from any tube framer frame will cause blindness, uncontrollable body odor, and make your dog run away. It has also been known to cause premature hair loss and male sterility.

3) Cutting into the frame in any way on any tube frame Buell (especially S1's and S2's) will instantly trigger a small scale nuclear reaction, killing you, your family, and most of your community. Even discussing the topic seriously has been known to cause men's heads to spontaneously explode.

There. Make sure they know that also ; )

Thank the heavens I rescued a derelict S1W frame then.

I have never seen a Buell frame used (stock or modified) in a current chopper build. People use the engine/trans, forks, wheels, brakes, etc. but buy rollers from RE or other frame suppliers. If I wad up my X1 it will become a chop for sure. Erik and Buell owners/followers should take it as a complement that another group in the motorcycling family has embraced this bike (or at least most of it). If you don't like/appreciate this watch out as due to the cost of building big twin customs the Buell based builds are becoming very, very popular.

i dont consider buying stuff for your bike making it custom. i have seen some very cool buell choppers make by cutting the frames raking the neck, custom 6 degree trees, replace rear isolators with aluminum, (sportster exhausts, froward controls) and welding on a old school pre fab tail section. or even making a custom one themselves. i like to call them "over the top choppers" nothing under the engine. i like them, dont get me wrong. but i dont think it pays any respect to eric buell or the rest of people who love their beloved buells. it removes the bike from one class of bikes and places it into another. not saying it isnt a cool bike or anything like that, just i dont think it is still a buell at that point. i love all types of bikes new old foreign and domestic. and yes i ride a 1962 old school chopper, and a 1996 buell s2t.

Hey guys I think we are getting away for the point of the post. I wanted to know the difference in my 99 XI motor and the 98 M2 that I just bought. I want more speed from the M2. I like how it feels, easier to handle not so wide plus I set up more in on the M2.

probably the biggest difference is the .497 cams. i would look for a set of screaming eagle or newer buell cams, and bolt them in. what do you have for an exhaust on the m2?

also if your 98 still has the lightening heads you may want to step up to the newer xb heads. a little more investment than the cams but a nice gain. i would go with xb heads because the lightening heads use flat top pistons. thunderstorm use domed. you can change you push rods, front motor mount( or modify it) and bolt on the newer heads and dont even have to pull the cylinders. just a couple options.

Yes, what Aaomy said re. the xb heads is good advice. In combination with a set of Lightning cams you'd achieve around a 20hp increase over your stock M2 motor - without even having to change your stock flat top pistons.

Not a bad return, I think.

It has the hypercharger for the air cleaner. I don't know what the pipes are. The back one comes out on the right side and the front one goes under to the bottom of the left side.Looks and sounds good.Short megaphone type.It wouldn't stay running when I got the bike but took the carb off and cleaned the crap out.It runs good now. Just not as quick like my X-1. I like how it feels and handles compared to my X-1. I'm not very tall and have a bad back.A few people on here told me I should try different handlebars so I just bought the whole bike.My wife was not thrilled. I think I like the M2 better. Does not seem so wide.I wish I knew if the carb has been adjusted to the pipes and air cleaner.

Check your carb's jets. A 45 slow jet and a 195 main ought to work well.

With the head and cam mods above (less than a grand if you hunt around for used cams: lots of those out there) you'd have a bike that'd be quicker and probably more reliable than your X1 over the long haul.

Everyone I know with an X1 has cursed it's fuel injection system at one time or another. Though I'm sure it's been flawless for some others (necessary disclaimer to keep peace in the ranks : ) )

i agree on the 45 but the 195 main sounds a little rich for my blood. but each bike runs a little different. look at your plugs . they will tell you a lot about the way your bike is running. as a choice between the bikes, sounds like you already made that. ride the one that fits you best. with a little invested in the m2 you may find it out running your x1.

i say, let them all build as many choppers as they want, maybe once 50% of the decent bikes are gone, the value will increase to where it should be! kills me that a year old sportster holds much more value than a year old buell, just sickens me!!

I have a Vance & Hines slip on and I had to go to a 48 pilot jet. Waldo, the biggest advantage with a stock 99 M2 set up is Torque. Below 5000rpm, the M2 produces a lot more power than any other Buell short of the XB12. Flat torque curve is fun. I have ridden with other Buellers that have to do a lot more shifting to keep up. Since you already have all out fun with X1, I would do Thunderstorm heads, then stock 99 set up. It's good for 70+ ftlbs of torque to the rear wheel, from 3000rpm to 6000rpm.
