uh... this might be a stupid question, but what is the average life of a set of stock brake pads... i've had to replace my rear pads twice (at roughly 10K and 20K miles)... is this normal?

fyi: i'm not an agressive rider... i mainly use my bike for commuting here in san francisco, and occasionally for playing on the back roads of marin county.

Yeah, that's about when I had to change mine. The stock Buell pads are soft purposely; i.e. the pads "sacrifice" themselves to keep you from replacing rotors.

pretty standard service life -- commuting (sometimes surprisingly) uses up brakes more than a good romp in the twisties does --

I go through two sets of pads on the front before the rear pads start to get thin.

Are you using the front brake?

i figured the city riding would eat brakes more than the twisties (especially when there's a stop light every 100 yards)... and if the pads are soft then replacement at 10k miles makes sense... as for using front vs rear brake, i always thought i used the front more than the rear, but i may be wrong. i'll have to pay attention to hand vs foot pressure.

thanks for all the info/ideas.

My front pads get replaced around every 5000 miles (if I'm lucky...along with the rotor), rear every 10000 (without a rotor).

Dual rotors are going on this weekend. My brake service interval should be extended greatly!

My x1 has almost 10k -- I bought it used. So unknown previous life. But it was the stock type front tire.

The brake rotor feels a bit wrapped. On slow speed stopping at light pressure there is a good amount of (wrapped) jerking feedback. Not smooth.

If the bike is rolled around the garage you can hear a high spot on the rotor.

What your advice?

I need to replace the tire and want to do it all at once...?
