i've noticed a lot of S2 being parted out, modified, torn apart.
is it time to start a tread for stock/restoring S2'S?
i like my modified one..but i love my stock one!!

Yep,
first thing I did with mine was put it back to stock. Second thing was ride it.......lots!

Engine stuff is one thing (I left the Mikuni on there) but cosmetically I think they look best stock.

I'm slowly building steam toward doing my 1995 S2.

I agree, it is a gorgeous bike as built. It currently has the factory custom paint on it, JB2 has the stock setting putting them back to stock white.

I plan to replace fasteners with Ti and stainless, do some cleaning and all new bearings. I'll contact Aaron for the motor. It's frankly fine for me right now and I'll follow his guidance to bring it up a bit.

Jury is out on the brakes. I like the look of the new 2000 SS but there is something alluring about the rust laden Fe rotor.

I've started by taking many, many pictures. In addition, I purchased one of those 75 storage drawer plastic trays that all the stock fasteners will go in and be cataloged.

In terms of performance this Buell is not match for the XB9SX next to it. But in sentimental terms, there is something about the FIRST Buell down the Blue Ridge Parkway, Delaware Water Gap, Grand Canyon, Palomar, Golden Gate Bridge, Mount St. Helens, etc....

It stays......right next to the 1952.

: )

there are mods you can make and still keep the legend alive....court has the right idea!!
if you have a stock S2, and plan on heavy mods....remember, thats one less on this planet...and they will never be produced again.

I'm going to leave mine pretty stock except for minor cosmetic stuff.
I do have a spare set of bodywork, it's going to be modified in some form.
I really like the way Ricky Morrison's one piece tail/tank cover looks.
No changes to the frame or anything so I can always put the stock glass back on.

Court, I too like the stock iron rotor. I love the whining sound it makes when slowing down.
Took me a few rides to figure out what was making the noise. Must be the hole pattern.

I have a couple of spare iron rotors for when this one is shot. I'll have them for a few more years!

When the time comes, I'm also going to consult Aaron for motor mods.
My M2 will get them first, then maybe I'll use the T-Storm bits on the S2.
That stuff will have to wait, $$ has to go elsewhere.
The tranny went south on my wife's van and 2nd semester tuition is due for my daughter.
There goes my motor... : (

I love my S2, I'm pretty sure that's the bike I'm bring to AZ fest in April.

Have to replace both tires, drive belt, rear wheel bearings, swing arm bearings and isolators.
No problem!!
Damn good excuse to finish the sheet rock in the Crisis Center and install a heater!

There are a ton of things you can do and still keep the original appearance of the S-2.Cosmetically--I polished the front mount, the rear brake hanger, the axle adjuster caps, the triple clamps, the aluminum side plates, the oil tank, the swingarm mounting block, the intake manifold, swingarm brace.Made a custom aluminum front pulley cover, aircleaner insert with a S-2 decal, bar ends, mirror extenders. The stainless exhaust looks really nice polished up.
I added XB rocker covers to help with blowby/spooge and a Jaz catchcan.I chromed the kickstand and the front lower engine mount.
I added a Penske shock and had the front forks redone.I am in the middle of an engine rebuild,1250 kit,Nallin heads,Redshift cams,S&S lower end.6 speed Baker trans.Banke shifter, frame brace, and brake pedal.
I have used a Quiksilver carb,a CV,and a Mikuni and liked them all.Dyna 2000 single fire ignition.None of these mods changed the classic good looks.Simply made a great ride better.

Brad--crisis center.I love it!Wheel bearings can be had at any good bearing supply house -- and good quality ones.I was laughed at when I took my S-2 bearing from Turkey in to get new ones.He had never seen bearings from Turkey and had to call everyone over.
How many miles on your belt?Mine had 75000 and still looked good when I swapped it before 2003 Bonneville runs.

I ordered a complete "front end" kit from American Sport Bike last week. Ti pinch bolts, rotor bolts, wheel bearings and head bearings.

I'd get the forks done, but my specialist is in Irag at the moment. May have to break done and follow Henrik's Traxxion lead.

Jim,
My belt let loose late last fall while accelerating down an on ramp.
At first I thought I missed 3rd gear.
Odd as I've never missed a gear on the S2.
It was the belt..... the bike has about 36,000 on the clock, I'm pretty sure it is the original belt.

I got replacement bearings at a supply house. Top of the like SKS if memory serves.
The 2 right side bearings are common, the left isn't. Cost damn near twice as much as the rights.

I'll post numbers tomorrow in the approprate section.

Court,
Traxxion Dynamics is four miles from my house.
They are great people! They did a front end service on my '95 S2 and the R100RT.
I'm thinking of doing the '96 this winter.

I love my VERY near stock S2. I don't need / want it to go as fast as the other bikes on the road. I want people to see the Buell-ty that I am on.

I may have asked in the past, but, why did you change the body? Was it simply a cosmetic issue? What did you do with the old body work?

What do ya mean,"change the body" I didn't change the body. Well, actually, the former owner of the bike changed it. I think it was simply a cosmetic issue - I recall statements that started with F... and ended with ...gly. I have been told that the original bodywork (technically mine) is hanging supposedly unscathed on the wall of his garage, 3 time zones east of here. White, he said, flip up seat thingy, et al.

Al: Let's get it! I can make arrangements to have it collected. If you don't want it, let me know. I'd buy it just to preserve it.

For what it's worth, I'm in Indy and make a couple trips a year out to L.A. I'd be happy to hold on to it and deliver as opportunities arise.

Anything to keep the breed complete even though your ride is beautiful as is.

Aaron - It's just outside Oneonta, about an hour south and a bit west of you. I used to live in Stamford, NY in the early 70's and used to hitchhike to Jamestown H-D for Panhead parts in the winter! Freakin' cold! Are they a Buell dealer these days?

I'm not sure I want it and I also am not enamoured with the look, although I think the RSS models are stunning!

If I had any sense, I would sell it to fund the turbo repair. I'm beset with a quandary of proportion here - Do I keep it to sell with the bike if & when that may occur? Do I sell it and "break up the package"? Do I put it on loan to be displayed in The Canfield Municipal Museum of All things Buell? Let it remain, lonely, forlorn and unreconciled in my friend's garage? (hoping it's supposed unscathedness remains intact) The mind reels.

Which raised the question: Does homely unobtainium retain it's value as well as pleasingly aesthetic unobtainium?

hey al thats cool! the harley shop in jamestown used to be a buell dealer. unfortunately that ended just after the tubers, and now i dont even think that they will touch a buell. much less any thing over 4 years old,"as im told" still a good bunch of guys, brian, dave's son has a sweet m2 with the zippers 88 inch kit. half and half black and orange, pretty bike.
about the body work. only you can decide, i love the old rss because they are pre harley, same way i love my 62 , pre amf, pre motorcompany. guess i just like to be different. would love to strap rs body work on my s2 but dont know if that is possible. then again i have a honda fairing on it now. liked the way it stretched back around the tank like the rs work did, i usually dont listen to what i cant do, just prove what i can. if you need a hand acquiring your body work or anything just give a shout. or if your ever coming back to the area,, "highly recommend not during the winter"

I currently have 2 Westwinds in my "museum". Neither have been ridden in over a year. Thye each need some minor tweaking to be road worthy and I'm having too much fun riding my S2 and X1 to be bothered!

Buelledan,
Just because I'm a nice guy and all, and care about those neglected Buells, I could very much find a home where they could roam on a daily basis. You could even come vist 'em whenever you like : )

I think the reason that they are stripped and torn apart is because people can get more money that way. You can get alot more for all the little parts on ebay than for an S2 in good running condition. You can get as much for just the drivetrain.

If the bike is twisted, then thats great..but just to rip apart a sweet S2..
