I am interested in opinions about an underseat tray for my X1. I recently discovered that Banke makes one that is less costly than the one at American Sport Bike, and it appears to be cleaner and less obtrusive. I am looking for as clean and tight a look as possible.

I have e-mailed Banke and asked for photos of the unit installed.

Please provide comments and experiences.

My profile shows the Banke piece. Really nice but installing the tail light took a bit of patience.
I can't offer any input on the carbon one from Al (American Sport Bike) but I do know that he doesn't sell any junk.

Thanks Steve.

We certainly don't knowingly sell junk. For a while, one of the suppliers that we had for some older CF parts that was not building the product using Prepreg. They were heavy, they were inconsistent, and the weathered poorly...I've turned those products off. I've replaced some of them with prepreg versions, others are just discontinued. I just don't want to sell products that people aren't satisfied with. In the big picture, it just isn't worth it.

I have a Hayden Krank vent that I think I've talked about 10 people out of. I don't believe in the product, there's one in stock since the day I bought the biz. People call to order it, I tell them they don't need it, they believe me. I keep hoping that someone will one day argue with me so I can sell it in good conscience. Some salesman, eh?

The X1 CF undertail is a beautiful part, IMHO. Not to take anything away from the Banke, which is a good deal, but the Banke part is a little industrial compared to the CF part. Both clean up the lines of the bike that are just destroyed by the hideous stock rear fender. A.S.B. didn't used to offer the Banke one, I guess to keep it from eating into the CF part sales, which it does. I don't think that I should be making that choice, the customer should. We sell both now.

I think there must be a DOT regulation that says that ALL motorcycle manufacturers must make the ugliest water blocking fender that they can. Seems most bikes have something hideous back there that must be removed.

Thanks for the response and the photo. The picture I could edit to brighten up the image I think, so I'll try that.

AL,

I do like the carbon fiber as well, but the way it sweeps to the bottom of the tail light bracket detracts from what I think I want in terms of a knife edge look. However, it is indeed a nice look anyway as I have seen them in person.

Decisions, decisions!!

Here are a couple of shots of my new Trojan beaten aluminum underseat tray.

The quality of the hand beaten work is excellent. I am very pleased to have this unique item on my X1.

There were a couple of issues however.

1. The main attachment holes were 3/16" off. That meant I had to re-drill them myself.
2. The seat hook notch was off by 1/8", but in the opposite direction which has caused the tray to sit off center, creating a tight fit on one side of the seat frame and a large gap on the other side.
3. The license holder has a notch for tail light plug. The notch was 1/8" too shallow and I had to fix that myself.

Having said that, the main features that I wanted are intact. Let me also say too, that the fixes were VERY EASY to make (even though I whined about it), so don't let the possibility of having to make these adjustments keep you from getting this tray.

The grommet system that Matt employs to allow the signal wiring access into the tray space is really well thought out. In fact the whole thing is very well thought out. Even with the glitches, I believe I have the best tray available.

I gave Matt a freindly and informative e-mail regarding the glitches, so he could fix his jig or whatever. I am not advertising bad news here, just giving a report. I wouldn't hesitate to return to Trojan for other unique items.

3/12/05 - Addendum: Matt did e-mail me about these issues and told me that the tail pieces are not always consistent, so it is tough to always get the holes and notches dead on. I'm OK with that.

Cheers,

Jon

P.S. Matt was great to deal with.
