That's an accurate statement. There are plenty of us, similarly afflicted, in the area. Heck, it's gotten to the point where we have ceremonial Buell worship rituals.

Tony,

I put a Thunderstorm top end (heads and pistons) and Lightning cams in my S2 and really like the results. The Thunderstorm heads bolt to the front motor mount with one 3/8" bolt and one 7/16" bolt, unlike the stock S2 heads which use a pair of 3/8" bolts. You'll have to drill open one of the motor mount bracket bolt holes. No big deal, just be careful. Use a drill press if you can and make the clearance hole 29/64".

Planning to add an S3 bottom end this winter, too, to take advantage of the lighter Lightning-style flywheels and the increased responsiveness they afford. Maybe going to 88" with the motor too, but that's another story....

Be warned: The more you ride your S2, the more you're gonna like it. Especially if you like riding on lightly travelled, twisty backroads.

These are very fine motorcycles.

S-2 bottom end is just fine.And the XB heads from NRHS are the way to go.Get a manual.What mods are done already?Maybe a 1250 kit from same.

Like the Fireman said; if you're just starting the madness/modifications, XB heads are probably a better starting point these days. They will require a new front engine mount, but NRHS sells those as well.

Tony,nothing wrong with the stock clutch set-up.Will take an amazing amount of abuse and HP.What do you mean by "slip clutch set-up" and why do you think you need it?The Baker 6 speed is very nice but pricey.And on the early bikes(read S-2's) you loose the neutral light,mild case grinding necessary.If you are just looking for better shifting,upgrade the shifting set-up with later model set-up and get a Banke shifter.

when you down shift hard coming into a turn it won't lock up your rear wheel..it lets the tranny "slip"

I'd work towards the Whole Enchilada:

1) make a plan; for instance, since you seem to want to do engine improvements; I want to end up with a proven aftermarket muffler mounted to equal length headers, Mikuni carb, Race or good aftermarket ignition module to maximize final tuning, 1250 cylinder kit with worked XB heads and matching pistons providing a good squish band. I want the cams to provide a *really* broad torque curve for maximum street riding enjoyment, while max HP doesn't matter. Your own plan may vary, but the idea is the same.

2) with that plan mapped out, talk to one of our good performance shop sponsors; NRHS and Cyclerama springs to mind. They can make recommendations as to which parts to get - which combinations will provide the result you're expecting/hoping for.

3) purchase as many of the goodies as you can afford this time around, making sure you'll end up with some improvement, while keeping the bike ridable and be set up for the next stage of performance parts when you have the $$. I would of course recommend buying from the shops that were helpful to you in defining the plan.

You could also work towards improving suspension: have the forks reworked & add aftermarket shock. Traxxion Dynamicx and Al at American Sport Bike can help you out there.

Now, that ought to take care of your $1500 ... and then some ; )

Firemanjim (the world's fastest fireman?) sayz:S-2 bottom end is just fine.

And I suppose he's right... in a way.

The stock S2 bottom end with it's heavy Sportster flywheels will work "just fine". Being heavier than the later Lightning-type flywheels, they'll provide your motor with greater "mass dampening". Which will, all other variables being equal, run more smoothly than a motor equipped with lighter flywheels.

The down side is that it'll take longer to build revs when you twist the throttle open. It'll take longer to decelerate in off-throttle mode, too.

Removing mass from the flywheels, especially the periphery, has the same effect as increasing a motor's horsepower. More specifically, it frees horsepower that would otherwise be used to accelerate heavy flywheels, and allows it to throw in it's lot with the others working to propel you down the road with greater haste.

In motorcycling, haste = good. Ask Jim. : )

In Jim's defense, a Land Speed Racer would likely benefit more from the mass dampening qualities of heavier flywheels than it would the increased accelerative/deccelerative qualities of lighter flywheels.

Now, how about those XB heads?

I've seen Aaron saying somewhere he preferred a 15 degree squishband (like a Thunderstorm head?) on more highly tuned motors. XB heads provide a flat squishband.

So, does that mean he prefers T-Storm heads for Stage III type mods over XB heads? Or does he use a 15 degree squish, and associate pistons when he takes XB heads to the Stage II level?

I'm looking for answers to these questions as I'm planning to order some Stage III Nallin heads very soon, (possibly two sets) but I don't know which type to plan for in my project(s).

XB heads cut for the fifteen degree T-Storm piston is Aaron's preference, he has stated previously. (Although I'm sure he doesn't need me to speak on his behalf.) That is possibly my winter-of-05 project for the S2, as well as Plan B for the Sportster rebuild this year.

Thanks for the info on squish configuration, that's more in the direction of what I needed to know.

More specifically, I'm a little confused as one of the primary advantages of the XB heads appears to be lighter valves with 7mm stems and lighter "bee-hive" taper wound valve springs.

However, NHRS installs valves with 8mm stems and heavier, conventionally wound springs when they build Stage II and Stage III heads (just like T-Storm heads). At that point the advantage must simply be in the shape of the XB's ports and combustion chambers. Or is it? That's what I need to know.

In stock form the XB head outperforms the T-Storm head, that's understood. How about the difference in performance by the Stage III level of modification with larger unshrouded valves and ports suited to breath best for 88" applications?

I'd call Nallin and ask them directly, but my phone access is limited during business (read working!) hours.

The race kit CF ham-can will have to do until I modify the stock S2 headpipe to include a 2.5" collector. The stock angled CF ham-can doesn't clear the '98 T-Storm exhaust pipe that I'm using at the moment. Try to understand. : )

If you'd back off trying to beat me to that Pro Pipe I could resolve the issue toot sweet! : D
