I'm looking at a 1997 system - I really only want the muffler.
Does anyone know if the muffler mounting scheme for the 1997 would be the same as in 2002? This is for Thunderbolt.
I know the brackets were beefed up between those MY's - but I'm not sure if the actual mounting locations/points were changed.
Does anyone have any bad experiences with Spring retained mufflers (i.e.: Vance and Hines)? Thanks for amy feedback.

As Tim indicates, the header outlet on a 97 was 2" while the 98 and up S3s were 2 1/2. Also the 99 and up front exhaust mount was different. Same location, but the old cans can not fully take advantage of the newer mounts. The old cans typically had a single hanger welded, or clamped on but the newer cans typically have a double hanger made to mate with the newer style mount.
