i have a 98 SW1, 11k on the clock...when i start the bike cold, it cranks fine, but, if for example, i refuel, and restart i get a weird grinding noise, and sometimes a spark/smoke from solenoid/ starter area, but it still cranks, and starts. after looking through the search function, it seems it might be the solenoid. ( all wiring is clean/ grounds are good) Should i try the solenoid rebuild kit first? and is it the same as any evolution sportster? any buddy have a part number? thanks guys in advance!

I once had this issue on my X1. There is a tiny wire that connects to the solenoid, make sure it is on there securely. Mine was a bit loose once and caused some smokey, clicky starts.

If thats not the issue, could be the ignition going bad. That one sucks. I can source a part number if you need

Check ALL your grounds too.

Snug up battery terminals as well, 10mm.
