The FSM (the only one I have is the Web one of the s1 1997)
The directions are not clear to me probably for my poor english?
It says:
Adjust front forks by first turning the slotted dial clockwise with
a screwdriver until it stops
then:
turn the dial counterclockwise the recommended 12 (rebound) or 20(compression) positions.


There is NOTHING to understand . It's simple.
Example of compression:
if the total CLICKS are 28 (I'll end with 8 clicks IN from total counterclockwise position), OR 20 clicks from Total clockwise position.

BUT AT THE END it says: A higher number of clicks increases damping.

IF it would say: A higher number of clicks (in the CLOCKWISE direction), increases damping. I was more sure .

I ask because i feel the front too soft so I wanted to stiff a bit.
But when i tried to see the starting point , they were 8 clicks out from total clockwise position.
SO I'm already in the stiffer side? (8 clicks instead of 20?)

That's a beautiful S1W! I have a white with nuclear blue frame & wheels S1W. They are wonderful machines.

Turning the adjuster out (counterclockwise) increases damping.

Your starting point of 8 clicks is low damping.

But I continue to say that the directions in the FSM are stupid . They allow wrong interpretation.

Example of compression:
I turn it CLOCKWISE to STOP.
Then, if I turn OUT (back ...so COUNTERCLOCKWISE) 20 clicks , I'm at recommended setting.
Then YOU say that If I turn BACK (out or counterclockwise ) MORE THAN 20 clicks I'm STIFFENING the fork).

And this can be correct because then the FSM says: "A Higher number of clicks increases damping" . BUT THIS IS TRUE ONLY If the FMS is saying that "A Higher number of clicks" MEANS MORE than 20 out from fully IN !.

BUT the FMS says also:
Increase rebound/compression (slower):
Turn appropriate adjuster clockwise.

Decrease rebound/compression (faster):
Turn appropriate adjuster counterclockwise.

I've had several different types of motorcycles but this FSM is one of the worst

Tomorrow I'll try to to set it to Fully IN and then to Fully Out just to have confirmation on what is the right direction to stiffen the forks.

"Generally" screwing an adjuster "in" will increase compression or rebound damping, as that is what is closing the orifice, restricting fluid flow.

Sometimes some manufacturers will specify starting at "fully out" to prevent a hamfisted person from damaging the seating surface when they are trying to start from "fully in".

True.

Pay attention to the phrasing "lightly bottom" when screwing the adjuster IN. Don't damage the brass orifice with the (likely) steel or aluminum adjuster needle...
