What would be considered high mileage on a tuber?
Specifically, a 2001 X1 Lightning.
I'm interested in one for a possible purchase, but it has 42,000 miles on it and that kind of makes me apprehensive about its life expectancy.

Thanks guys.

Top ends usually get tired around 90k miles +.

42K isn't high mileage.

75K is getting there. But, easy to rebuild top end.

I look at it this way, ridden bikes are bikes that don't have any current issues. A 2001 X1 with those miles, in my humble opinion, is ideal mileage for the age of this bike.

If i were you, i'd buy it. X1's are comfortable, wickedly reliable, pretty decent trip bike, and corner as fast as anything out there (not the 1190 series however ). If it's $3,500 or less, probably a good deal.

You could demand to get a proper compression test. I would. Other than that worse case would be a top end refresh. I agree that the bottom end will last another 42000 if updates are made like the oil pump and drive gear.

Went and looked at it and I'm probably going to pass on this bike.
The supposed owner moved to another state and left the bike with a friend--I'm an acquaintance of the friend. Was supposed to only be a couple weeks but has turned into a couple months.
It's a 2000 not a 2001, is pretty rough cosmetically, the plate isn't on the bike (supposed to be non-opped), the paperwork isn't with the friend, missing the rear turn signals, it has a hideous aftermarket headlight/fairing thing, the battery is junk so I couldn't even hear it run, has some aftermarket fake carbon fiber look hard tank cover with one Buell script on one side, clutch lever tip is broken off--the whole bike just looked like it hadn't been cared for. It does have a D&D muffler, though. lol

Yeah, doesn't sound like a prized possession!

I'd pass too.

Yeah, there's way better out there. Good call.
