My tach has a awful rattle, it's only a few mm loose but very annoying. Just got new tires and brakes and it has been fun riding it so far this summer. The x1 has the windshield removed so there is nothing holding the tach or speedo other than the instrument plate that holds the ignition and the indicators. Only the tach is loose though. I tried tightening the two bolts in the back of the tach but it doesn't seem to do anything. It looks so simple but how do I tighten it to the instrument plate?

You probably have worn rubber cushions. I think VPI still has them, but they're not cheap. You can try to find an aftermarket replacement as they just foam rubber rings.

I had thought about just wrapping the gauge with some electrical tape to close up the gap, but mine were dry and brittle and fell apart when I removed the gauges.

Maybe cut some pads out of a piece of felt?

Thanks that makes sense. It's not cracked but it is worn and not holding like it should enough play to really sound annoying. I recently changed the gas cap O ring it was all cracked and expanded so much when in use, it would fall right off the gas cap and was almost as wide as the whole cap but shrunk when not in use that it would stay in place. Weird how much it can expand right.

unfortunately the tach ring doesn't expand when in use. lol!

I found a BUELL BLAST SPEEDOMETER ring on ebay. That should fit?

anyone got a part number or the buell blast speedometer fit?
this one,

The shifter seal was also replaced but I still need to change the inspection cover seal above it then it will have all new seals. I saw a guy use high temp gasket seal for leaks so that is an option but getting the O-rings/seals while they are available. I was thinking of using the gasket maker to fix the tach movement but prefer to get a new O-ring.

I believe a LOT of the old Buell's used the Sportster gauges?
I swapped my wrinkle paint housings for chrome ones (Sporster). Possibly the rubber Tach/speedo ring could be the same part? Go to your local Harley Dealer and match one up?

I remember this from years ago. Its a bitch. I ordered a couple of Dyna Chrome Ring covers and put them on the speedo and tach just for looks. About 13 years ago. I have no rattle. X1

I looked at it today and there is one crack in that rubber o-ring. Haven’t tried to pull the gauge out. I need to change the bulb in my other gauge the speedometer. The tach is the rattling one.

Have any of you changed the bulb in the tach with a led? I wonder if the bulb is still the original one in the tach, 22 years old and still going??

Local hardware store probably has what you need.

Not everything on these bike come only from OEM motorcycle MFR's.

I replaced the stock bulbs with LED's. The LED's are a bit whiter and brighter. I've wondered how distracting that would be when riding. The stock bulbs may have been a better choice.

You probably could make some generic closed cell foam rubber from the hardware store work.

I believe mine had to come from VPI and we're available in the aftermarket, so at some point, making something "generic" work is going to be the only option.

Yeah I was thinking of changing the instrument plate to a aluminum one but I kinda like it black and also it’s kind of a hassle. The original plastic instrument plate does vibrate with no fairing support and I’d guess an aluminum one won’t or less. Maybe something I should get later and would reduce O-ring wear if that was the cause other than sun and age.

Running light and signals are led currently so I was thinking of changing any bulb that needs to be to led. Kinda wondered if anyone change theirs and what it looks like and brightness. Maybe I’ll just get regular bulbs for the instruments and indicators.

Installed a led “fix” relay for the signals as well. Used to flash quick with the stock relay but now “normal”. I also saw a relay with turn knob so you can adjust how fast the blinkers work. That was kinda interesting.

Thinking about riser again. https://voigt-mt.de/VMT-Voigt-MT-Freiburg-Handleba r-risers-25mm-for-Buell-XB12S-Lightning-XB1-2003-2 010-silver-anodized-kit-bar-mounts-1-inch

This will work for tubers. Its for 22mm 7/8 bars. Would be installing some kind of support with a rubber end. This will support the top of the dash so it doesnt thump as much.
