I've got my eye on a very lightly used 2002 S3T. I think it'd make a great bike for my wife who has outgrown her Blast. Are there any glaring issues with this model/year? Anything in particular that I should be aware of? What is a fair price considering the bike is in near mint condition?

Thanks,
Steve

Is it stock? $5500.
Put a race ECM on it.
It will be quite a bit taller and much more top-heavy than the Blast.

A little more power also.

Its a pretty heavy bike. I would make sure my wife could handle the weight of the bike tipped about halfway over. What I mean is have her sit on the bike and lean the bike halfway over and then right it back to upright by herself. If she can do that she will love the bike. the 02 S3s were very well sorted.

The bike is totally stock and it has very few miles (read 100 or less). I believe it has the touring kit. She's pretty strong and stands about 5'8" so I don't think the height or weight would be a problem. She'll definitely have to get used to the power.

Thanks for the replies.

She'll love it Johnny. She is a good sized wench, so she'll be able to handle it (and you). The ergo's are also very much like the Blast in terms of upright standard seating. The last of the Buell touring bikes. Sniff, sniff. I would not have my $$$ down on a Triumph Sprint if Erik was still making one.

From everything I hear/read, the 2002 S3T is the best year of the F.I. model years. I have a '99 that I bought new in '01 for $8500. Most of the recalls were done, but it took me 20k miles and 2yrs to get the bugs out - rides great now (knock on wood/or my head). Seems the last year of any model usally winds up being the best - they finally get them right; then stop making them. Go figure.

Thanks for the 411.

I agree the sport touring market is often overlooked. We turned her Blast into a sport tourer with a Givi windshield, soft bags, and a waterproof kayak bag that we strap on the tail. She keeps up with the bigger bikes but it's a struggle in the hills.

I have a sport tourer so I'll leave my XB12R alone, but it would be cool to lower the foot pegs, put a larger windscreen, add some luggage and put some bar risers on a firebolt and create a whole new category.

Oh well what's one more loan?

Hey Jonny and wife, I am a great fan of the S3T since I own an Orange one made in 02. By definition the S3T is the touring model and should be complete with bags lowers tall riser and touring bars. In 11000 miles I did have an inner fender crack and it appears I do need a new front rotor but the bike is great. I would follow the lead of other owners and get a Buell touring seat(the custom one with contrast piping) and a Zero Gravity windscreen...I should have done it sooner myself. Skip the race ECM it is for off road use only anyway. The 101 ponies stock will rock all but the hardcore anyway and the mileage suffers. I believe you also have to change pipes too and you have now lost all the advantages of a cheaper used bike and still wont catch your friends 600 crotch rocket.Remember K.I.S.S. Keep it stock stupid. If Erik had meant for us to have the race ECM on a street bike ,he would have provided it.

One thanks for the input...I think it is in our future since I believe the S3T still available. We need to make the decision, and if it is still available when we do, so be it. If all goes well it will be in the stable within a month. I am also a firm believer in the "keep it stock" mentality. I will not sacrifice reliability for two extra horsepower. I like to ride, not race.

Oh well...it was sold. I hesitated and I lost...the wife is a bit upset. We are looking at some comparable (sort of) Japanese bikes, but she was really looking forward to the S3T. Come on Mr. Buell make a Sport Tourer please!

FJR1300. The "PDP" is on again so you can order one for late winter/early spring delivery.
Course it costs twice as much as a used S3T...

Josh - the FJR is a nice bike but very expensive as you pointed out. My wife is intimidated by full fairings for some reason. Now that we are considering other bikes, it has become apparent to her how little "soul" some of these other offerings have and she regrets not having got the S3T when we first saw it. Live and learn I guess.

One of my buddies has a beautiful black/volcano grey '02 S3T for sale. It's got idiotically low mileage (eighteen hundred, maybe?) and is bone stock with the deep bags. It does have a Corbin seat.
He bought a camper and doesn't use it so if you're interested, drop me a line for his phone number. The bike's in PA.

I miss my S3t. Sold it to buy a HD dresser. (What a stupid mistake) The guy that has the S3T now is turning it into a chopper.

Where's a time machine when you need one?

Blake and BadWeb members - sorry if I came across as a commercial wheeler and dealer. I'm am not a dealer...I am a motorcycle enthusiast with interest the same as yours...particually Harley-Davidson's and Buells. You administer a great forum with lots of knowledgeable members that share experiences, rides, and technical expertise regarding motorcycles...Buells. I really enjoy reading many of the forum topics or sites and have it listed in my "favorites" along with Jeep and the Miata forum...I own those too. Again, I'm sorry if I stepped on any toes...maybe I'm pursuing too hard. BTW I've owned the 2001 Buell for a couple of years now...owned Harleys and other motorcycles for the last 40 years. Thanks, hdtrader
