Hello All,

So my rear brake/lamp cover just fell off during a ride. I'm looking at a new cover for an eyewatering price but does anyone know the specs on the long bolts?

I'm thinking of going led for less than half the price but can't find any good information. ( https://www.ebay.com/itm/262845673173?hash=item3d3 2d2aed5:g:gJgAAOSwCU1YnRs7)

Thanks Staps

~ First the X1 tail light is smaller and a different shape.
~ OMG, another unobtanium part. This sucks! Suggest searching on EBay for buell s3 parts. Use this to contact the dismantlers directly and ask if they have one.
~ The screw, VINC0199.2, is 17,12 euro each from twinmotorcycles.nl. I have replaced mine with 7 x 2" drywall screws. Not ideal but works. Just remember the woodworkers trick to not strip threads in wood and plastic by first turning the screw counter-clockwise until you feel the screw threads drop into the original threads in the plastic.
~ The same tail light was used on: RR/RS/RSS 1000 & 1200, S2, and S3.

Ah! Moto GUZZI used the same tail light assembly around 1993! Good luck.

I have a new old stock rear light lens. It has a narrow reflector along the bottom edge of the lens as used on Guzzis of the era. This could be trimmed off and the lens used on an S3. No issue. I did buy it as a spare for a Buell, but the bike has been sold.

I note that the link in the post above shows the rear lens with a reflector strip. The one I have is the same. Thanks.

I am in the UK, so it would have to be shipped internationally. However, if it would be of interest, let me know and we can sort something out.

Hello Classicbuells,

That sounds perfect, I am definitely interested and a Brit in NL. What sort of price do you want for the lens?

That's good. The last UK price I can find listed for 68074-94Y is around £70. How's £25 sound? Postage tariff shouldn't be too bad as it's quite light.

Let me check in the garage, I can't remember if the screws are with it. Hopefully they are.

Let me know if you would like it sent over.

Edited to add, screws are present with the lens. Private message me and I can send a couple of pictures across. Thanks.

Cheers.

CB

Thanks for the replies!

Classicbuells has helped me out but 89rs1200, that info was very helpful!

I would have gone the Guzzi part route probably and none of that info turned up in my first searches.

Cheers

Check old threads here before you install your new light. I converted my S2 (same taillight) over to LONNNNNG bolts and locknuts years ago, and posted a thread about it. I want to say I got some 3" #6 machine screws, and nylock nuts. Might have been #4's. Regardless...they're thin, but that's OK because they aren't holding any weight.

Drilled through the threaded sockets in the tail section, all the way through to the fender/tire side. Screws through the existing holes in the lens, all the way through the fender, and nylocks on the inside.

Oh, I also installed the innards from a Ulysses taillight (LED), and some flashing LEDs from a Whelen emergency light, at the same time...

Hey Ratbuell,

That's a good idea, I will look into the post and look at using bolts.

I was thinking the old plastic stubs are looking untrustworthy. So maybe then filling building up the structure with a soft resin.

There was a recent post by Upthemaidan on a LED upgrade but the LED looked dim. Maybe emergency lights will help it out. I did see a pic of your light internals.. somewhere

Cheers

For LEDs for cars and motorcycles, I find https://www.superbrightleds.com/ has the best selection and price.
Purchased my headlight as a set, for the price of one on other sights.

I've gone through a few tail lights on my S1. I've used a couple stock ones that all seem to only work when they want to, I think the contacts get weak and stop pressing against the bulb. The housings/covers like to crack. I tried an aftermarket LED light, probably made by the same company as your ebay link, although mine came as a complete light. First one I got was broken when I got it, 2nd one worked but it wasn't super bright, and eventually some of the LEDs quit working. If anyone has used that led insert in the link and has an opinion on whether or not it works well, I'd potentially be interested in trying it so I could go back to my stock tail light housing.

Now I have the stock Uly tail light like Staps mentioned. The regular tail light is a little dimmer than I'd care for, but the actual brake light is pretty bright. I think part of the problem is the transparent housing and chrome housing inside already reflects a bit of light, so when it's sunny it's hard to differentiate between that and the running light. The biggest downside to that one is that the Uly has an odd tail/mount for the light, so the back of the light itself is bulky and ugly, and then the mounting block/adapter I made for it just made it worse. Someday I'll come up with something that looks nice, but it's just been low on my priority list at the moment, since I'm just happy to have a light that actually works.

Open up the Uly light (it's sealed, so you aren't putting it back together) and remove the circuit board with the LED's. It should fit inside the S1/M2/X1 taillight assembly if you remove ITS innards to make room for it. that way, you lose the clear-lens "hard to see" part.

The running light wasn't super-bright on my S2, but it was visible (even against Snap Red paint). Brake light was good, and I added emergency light LED's on a wig-wag to the brake function as well.

Never got rear-ended!

Hello All,

One of the eBay sellers came back to me with some pics if your interested. See below.

I'm just getting LED bulbs for the moment and concentrating on getting back on the road. I can't be shrinking my side lights with a few close calls lately.

On that note, anyone got guidance on how to change a S3 front light bulb?

1) Remove front fairing, then remove headlight.
2)
~ Leave the fairing on.
~ Using a small open end wrench, remove the headlight adjusting knob. Note it is lock nutted on.
~ Use a small slip joint / Tongue and Groove pliers to squeeze and release the three headlight mounts, one at a time. Will need to push and wiggle on each bolt while releasing the mount nut.
~ Pull headlight out the front of the fairing.

With practice, 2) is quick and easy.
I keep a spare headlight and a pair of these in my motor's tool kit.
