Recently replaced a failed rear muffler strap on my stock X1 exhaust. All was great until after a few rides, I noticed a new noise starting at 3.1K RPM and beyond. It is certainly coming from the exhaust, and I think the front of the muffler. Kinda sounds like a metallic rattling/vibration. To me thats what a dirtbike exhaust sorta sounds like. Bike idles perfect when cold and hot, starts with no issues. Any Ideas what the problem/solution may be? (Message edited by piercethekiki on December 15, 2021) | ||

Could it be a leaking head gasket Or something let go inside the muffler!? Check the bike completely from top to bottom for something undone or letting go. Buell motorcycles are known for all kinds of rattle and shacking sounds! | ||

@brother in buells Ive checked the bike in neutral and reved it up until I hear the noise. Its definitely the exhaust system. all mounts appear to be fine however. I checked torque values when I installed the new rear strap. Im thinking maybe i need new grommets on the front mount Im very familiar with the noises my X1 makes. Dont think its an internal muffler problem or else id think i would hear the noise at any RPM @chasespeed Stock muffler and exhaust. | ||

Noises at certain vibrations are a huge pain, and I usually find that they end up being something really stupid that you don't expect. I had a truck that would make a horrible noise at a certain rpm that turned out to be one of those crappy aluminum exhaust heat shields that cracked and was laying on the pipe. For 2 days once I had an annoying noise that ended up being my flip down sun shade that didn't actually get clipped back in fully. My current truck sometimes makes a really light vibrating noise when I accelerate sometimes, and it took me a really long time to realize it was just the door to the flip down sunglasses compartment in the overhead panel that's I've just been too lazy to spend the 2 minutes it would take to fix. So hopefully it's not something serious, but I'd think something like that could be any random thing and you'll probably just have to check every part you can find to see if something is loose and causing it. Thank you everyone. Im quite sure it was the front muffler mount. The rubber grommet in there was toast, and the spacer bushing was rattling around. I have replaced with the updated front mount PN S1001.01A1 Now I have a new problem. The damn voltage regulator wont fit. The new bracket is too beefy. Does anyone have any ideas on how to relocate it or make it work in the same spot? May make a new post for this topic this | ||

Stock voltage regulator rotates 90 degrees and will fit the new bracket. May need to loosen the wire ties to do that. | ||

@89rs1200 Yes, I was very lucky and had the updated VR mounting bracket sitting in a bucket of parts I bought off a guy a while ago. Bike is put together and running fine. Tips for anyone searching this problem in the future: 1. dont go randomly undoing the bolts on the voltage regulator bracket. They hold the front mount to the rear shock. Manual doesn't mention this however, very ••••••• dangerous. 2. if you lack a garage/hoists/jacks, etc, gently lay the bike down on its left side in the grass and you can safely remove the shock and all associated brackets for the muffler. | ||

The best part of owning a supermoto... When I had mine years ago I could just lay the bike down on it's side to do whatever. Bonus was that you didn't even have to drain the oil to work on it because it was now all sitting on the opposite side of the engine. |
