Well, shit happens! Good news is that Mark is back on the road and the Buell is running well. Bad news is that it was a bad battery--the one I replaced no more than a couple weeks prior to his visit. Put a full trickle charge on it prior to installation, too. Guess the new generation of batteries is nowhere near as well-built and robust as the old ones. Sad that there wasn't a way for him to replace it under the warranty which had many months remaining. Thanks for the support gents!

Bummer the battery was shit, but glad he got it diagnosed and is on his way! Much better than having to truck it back home for a tear down.

Had to laugh as I did not suggest a dead battery. Thought someone had checked that already. LOL

He MUST check if the voltage regulator is charging the battery!! When batteries go bad they can often take out the crappy H-D voltage regulator!! While running about 2000 RPM, voltage should be about 14V with a fully charged battery. Anything below 12.5V means the motor is running on battery alone.

AGM (Absorbed Gas Mat) battery type. In my experience, they are the most robust and longest lasting battery type.
I have been getting 5+ years out of the Duralast Gold or Platinum batteries.

@89rs1200

Thx for the advice. Unfortunately, Mark was on the road without any real tools for checking electrical problems. I did install a new AGM battery, trickle charged fully before installation, in the bike about 3 weeks prior to his arrival. At that time, I checked the charging voltage and measured a steady 14.3V from just above idle to 2500 RPM. I have no way of knowing if something has gone wrong with the stator/VR since he left. Hopefully, it was just a one-off faulty construction in the new battery and he'll be fine for the rest of his journey.
