swap out my old Harley battery for a new battery two week later stuck on the side of the road no power at all. Send the battery back and there was a short in it. New battery about two weeks later stuck on the side of the road again absolutely no power again.The tach started going crazy right before I lost power. What am I looking for? Voltage regulator?

If you get either an upgrade shock installation or an exhaust bracket retrofit kit installation, make sure that your bike can charge its battery when you pick it up. Both jobs involve removing and installing the voltage regulator to a new mount where the VR must be properly grounded, otherwise charging system failures afterwards are likely. Click to enlargeChris, the BUELL mechanic at Ft. Washington HD, installed this SECOND GROUNDING WIRE between the back of the voltage regulator and the engine case. It goes between the back of the voltage regulator and the new mounting plate and ends at the case there on the right with the star washer. The first ground wire is part of the group of wires that exits the votage regulator. It is very important to remove the paint from the muffler mount and the case where they connect to provide a good electrical contact. The first wire I made came off and stranded me. So I had to get a jump to make it back to the garage. Reattached and no prob since.

Follow the trouble shooting list in the manual. Or for a quick check... Inspect the wires for chafed insulation and shorts in the wire loom from the VR routed back under the engine adjacent to the oil pump. I had a similar issue caused by a chafed wire shorting out on the shock absorber mount in this area. There are plenty of bits to cause wire chafing in this tight area where the wires are routed.

This would kill the battery? Like I said, everything was running well and then nothing. Not even headlight or dash lights

My short caused the bike to not charge the battery or provide ignition/spark energy and killed the battery in the middle of a ride abut 3 hours from home. My bike completely died while riding 60 mph on a highway after cutting out a couple of times in the few minutes before. Nothing worked.

Update, battery will not take a charge now

Wiring looks good,no chafed wires that I could find, battery has 10 volts but will not take a charge,fuses good stator good,main cricut breaker good. Timing module needs to be replaced but I've seen alot worse. Still dead
