Hi all, I just got my hands on a S1W and I am really enjoying it. Seems to run good, the top end was rebuild 90 miles ago and the while bike has about 6k miles on it. The only down sides are that it is missing the air filter and the ready shock is blown. For the air filter I was thinking I could just find a cone filter that would fit over the carb but if there is better options that aren't an arm and a leg I am all ears. For the rear shock, I am going to need some help. It already has a showa shock so I am assuming that means the recall has been done. Does anyone rebuild these units or are there any replacements? I don't plan on racing it at all, just something comfortable for little cruises around and sometimes with my wife. Thanks! | ||

Personally I would never spend the money to rebuild the stock rear shock. It will fail again and soon. Best options are Works or Penske. Try EBay or BadWeb. Penske will likely build you a new one, but expect to pay $1200.00USD. I recently purchased a new shock from Twin Motorcycles in the Netherlands. Should cost about $650.00USD including the shipping. Here is a shot of the carb.  Is there something inherently wrong with the Showa shock that will cause it to fail again after a quality rebuild? I really don't know anything about it and hate to waste money so $650 for a new unit that sounds like it is of much high quality beats $300+ to rebuild a bad unit. | ||

You are underestimating how good those $650 shocks are. Well, well worth the money and a massive improvement of the ride. Maybe someone else can explain better why those shocks aren't worth a rebuild anymore, but I wouldn't go that route either. Especially not for a part that's so easy to swap out. | ||

My 01 is 20 years old. Works great and doesnt leak. I dont weight just 200 pounds either. I agree that a more modern better built part is going to be better. | ||

Nice find! I have the forcewinder and it's very nice, but if you're not looking to spend that much, I've seen a few people here buy something simple like this online and were happy enough with it... https://www.ebay.com/itm/353291914873?fits=Model%3 ASportster+883&hash=item5241d6ce79:g:INsAAOSwvJ9fv byn I agree with what everyone else said, if you're gonna put out the money for a rebuild anyway and it's in the budget, I'd definitely spring for the Twin shock. They come highly recommended. I'm not sure what it is about the oem shocks, but they don't seem to be permanent shocks so it'd be nice for peace of mind to buy the one you know will last the life of your bike, and perform better while it does it. Otherwise you can find a used shock on ebay, just try to find the shorter 14" version, but obviously that's a gamble because you never know how well that one is going to work or how long it's going to last. | ||

Questions for the S1W owners / oracles please! ~ Did the S1W come with the Helmholtz resonator air box like the S3? Hard to know from photo searches as many people replaced them. ~ There was a slightly smaller Helmholtz air box made in fiberglass. Believe that was for the early S1s? Morning Scschafe, ~ Yours is the 1998 S1W right? ~ A photo would be greatly appreciated. You see, most of us here would like all tubers back to stock, (with needed improvements). We can help with that. ~ I have a forcewinder I can sell you cheap. ~ May also have a stock airbox with hardware, depending on your year and answer to my first question. The S1s did indeed have the Helmholtz resonator. They had the same style that came on the M2/S3. Not sure what years came with fiberglass vs plastic. I bought one a while after I got my 97, it's the plastic version and it fit fine. I assume if there was a year with a fiberglass version it would've been the earlier '96 bikes. | ||

Or you can get something from a Sportster. I have an old S&S teardrop on mine. I also chose to update the rear shock to a Twin Motorcycles unit. Its not as adjustable as the original unit was, but it performs well and complements the 25 year old front suspension nicely. (Message edited by 34nineteen on July 27, 2021) | ||

Wonderful find. The Forcewinder will be $30.00 which includes shipping. Interesting the previous owner left the Forcewinder adapter ring for you.  For the complete stock airbox, since it is my last complete, I will need to ask $100.00 + $40.00 shipping = $140.00. It is missing 1 small cap screw, washer, 2 small nuts, some tears in rubber gaskets that rubber cement will fix. Including 2 slightly used stock air filters. Your front head breather bolt should be a straight one. I will also include a straight breather bolt, (which is not pictured);   For installation, The rear head breather hoses goes through the hole in the backing plate. The Tee connects inside the air box with a hose to the fitting on the snorkel, the front breather bolt hose, and the rear head breather hose. | ||

That's a steal at 30. Paid nearly 300 for one here Europe (it was new, but still). Works very well in terms of knee clearance, performance too from what I can tell on my X1. | ||

Is that the breadbox that doesnt require the front motor mount "leg"? My 97 utilized it, but I *heard* the earlier ones didnt. | ||
