Picked up a new to me & almost actually new ‘98 S1W. This thing has 1,100 miles & has been in a climate controlled storage since 2001. This thing looks so clean looking up under the tank at the wiring & back where the battery should be. It’s like getting a low mile ‘98 model bike after a year of kite riding. I have got to drain the gas, go thru the carb, change fluids (should fork oil be changed?) & get a new set of tires then it will be ready to roll. Really liking the Nuclear Blue / Molten orange always seen pics but never one in person. Here’s a few pics from the drive home tonight.

Holy hell that is a nice find. Congratulations.

Guard that stock exhaust with your life! Would kill for one of those, haha.

Interesting to see that it has the narrow tank. Thought all S1Ws came with the manta tank.

Back when it was pretty much new it got the carbon fiber body parts & orange tank. It was originally a white bike. The orange tank is the recall tank with raised letters so I’m just wondering if the original owner picked the small orange tank, not sure if you could back when they were recalling the tanks.

A right, that explains it. Still, it's a gorgeous machine.

You asked about fork oil: I would definitely consider refreshing that. It's been in there for over two decades.

On that subject: https://youtu.be/e2PNb4vMVu0?t=421

Gorgeous bike! The orange and blue S1W, in my opinion, is as good as it gets when it comes to Buell. Definitely change the fork oil, but don't forget about brake fluid. Bonus for getting the updated shock with it.

Carbon is great, but you'll have to keep an eye out for the rest of the orange bodywork. That's the only thing that could make that bike any better. Congrats on the find.

Luckily here in Oklahoma when you transfer a vehicle into your name you don’t get hit with late fees on the current out of date tags.

There are states that charge you an extra fee if you buy a vehicle that doesn't have a current registration?? that's a scam.

Man, that thing is gorgeous! What are the front forks from? Looks like a sweet conversion.

The are indeed the stock forks. The M2 was the only tuber that came with the standard style forks. It would be an easy conversion for you though if you picked up some S1/X1 forks for your bike. You'll need the matching triple clamps and a new front fender, but the wheel and brakes and everything else should swap over to your bike easy enough.

My '96 Lightening also came with the raised letters on the tank. Of course, they "boiled" off, and they replaced it with the next years tank, with just stickers. Yea.....I was quite deflated about that....

I doubt, there is a "pristine" tank that came with raised letters.....left in this entire World!!

MINE...was a Black tank, so I don't believe it was with just the Orange tanks......?????

WHY....do you say, it was originally White? The colors you are displaying....seem right to me? From the Factory...???? The White Lightening, had a White frame?

The only thing wrong with it...is the tail section, is NOT also Orange!!

Daaaamn! Nice find! That bike is gorgeous!

Hang onto that Bartels intake, low profile and breathes well, nothing better out there in my opinion.

Check the cover regularly, some have just let go and flown off of people's bikes over the years.
I ran my M2 without the top cover and it did fine.

Thanks guys & I also found out it is an original orange bike, not white plastics as I was originally told.

I have wondered about the intake, it doesn’t seem too tight on there with the Velcro.

OH Yes....you are also missing the original "low mounted" rear fender.
You get that tail section into Orange, and find the proper rear fender.....THAT bike would be pristine!!

NOT sure if that bike still had the "bread box" air intake yet?

That was part of the battery tray kit, so you didnt have to use that weird-Harold S1 battery.

Hi Jolly,

Would be interested in purchasing your original S1 rear hugger-fender if you would like to sell. I have a couple S1 projects I could use it on.

Thanks,

Rick

How can people own a bike as fun as these, and NOT put riding miles on it?

My '96 S1, only has 3k on it. I could NOT afford any more speeding tickets!!

Have not rode it since.

Those bikes were not meant to just "ride".....

"My '96 S1, only has 3k on it. I could NOT afford any more speeding tickets!!"

I don't know why, I assume because of the harley grumble instead of the high pitched inline 4 scream of other bikes, but since I started riding Buells cops don't even give me a second look. I used to get pulled over doing nothing wrong at all, I figure under the assumption that they'd just find something to write me up for after I was on the side of the road, and usually you got away with a warning after they realized they couldn't find something. I've had Buells since maybe 2010, and haven't been pulled over once. I even had a supermoto in between, and those bikes are just made for doing stupid stuff, but I think people see you and assume you're just some boring nerd on a dual sport(apologies if you're a boring nerd on a dual sport) and don't assume you'll be doing anything wrong.
