Have not seen many tubers exchange hands lately. Looking to possibly do a local trade and wondering opinions on values. Bikes are both in Wisconsin.

see next two posts for details.

location is Wiconsin:
I haven't seen any tubers changes hands lately, so what's your opinion on value of this bike (in other words, what is a number that both parties should be happy with):
99 Buell S3 with full touring kit:
bags, bag liners, fairing bags, touring bars
completely stock
all recalls done, all upgrades done (oil pump gear, chain tensioner, swingarm isolators, upgraded exhaust hanger, new intake seals, rebuilt fuel injectors, etc, etc).
nearly flawless paint finish
5200 orignal miles
twin motorcycle shock plus stock shock
new tires
probably the cleanest S3 I have seen
looking to trade with a guy locally. what would you put the value at?

bike value part #2:
location is Wisconsin:
I haven't seen many tubers change hands lately. Looking to possibly do a local trade and wondering what a good number would be for value on this bike:
1998 Buell S1W with 4800 original miles!
start with the bad:
sitting in a barn 10 years prior to my purchase a couple years ago so many of the fasteners are corroded
some rust on the swingarm from sitting in barn
some rust on the headlight ears from sitting in barn
peeling away finish on the crankcase halves
typical bubbled tank decals that I have cut away and replaced with new decals. no other visible bubbles now.
now the good:
low miles (4800)
complete Buell race kit (headers, exhaust, intake and ECM
complete Buell race rearsets
all upgrades and recalls done (exhaust hanger, oil pump gear, chain tensioner, etc etc)
stock rear fender and American Sportbike carbon fiber shorty hugger with carbon fiber license bracket
TWIN motorcycles shock plus stock shock in a box
new in package chin fairing in molten orange
complete extra molten orange M2 tank that looks brand new
complete set of stock S1W headers, canister, breadbox intake and extra race ECM
new tires
stock seat AND euro seat (both perfect)
shop manual, parts manual, and owners manual
this exact bike was magazine featured back in the day and it comes with all the documents, magazine article, e-mails from editor and dyno sheets.

I was getting a little worried about the shape of the S1 as I was reading the description with all of the rusty parts, but then I scrolled down to the pictures and honestly, the bike looks amazing. At first I was going to say to give the S3 a $500 lead, but then remembered the S1w has the full race kit and that gorgeous orange/purple paint job. Honestly I think it seems like a fair trade as is. I personally would pay more for the S1 with sporadic rust spots, but I assume people who prefer the S3 might feel differently. Nothing too complicated to replace a few bolts, sand off a little rust and hit it with some touch up paint.

Long term I'm still convinced that the S1 is set to gain value. It is the most 'collectable' out of all the Buells. Given that - and given what Upthemaiden said regarding the reasonable state of the S1 - I think a closed wallet trade isn't unreasonable. There's also all the nice stuff it has. Even the stock carbon fender is present and accounted for!

That's not to say this is a trade you shouldn't make. Personally I think a sorted and well kept S3 like that is equally desirable.

Likely in the Top 5.

Buell sales

I'd say . . . the color scheme and condition would place it between $4,500 and $6,000. An absolute pristine example, sans the color combination but with lots of upgrades, sold for $7,000.

Thanks for input. I guess I wasn’t clear about my intentions for this post. I was looking for valuations on the S3 and the S1W. I currently own them both. I’m looking to get values on both so I can consider a trade plus cash for a Kawasaki ZRX1100. Sorry if it sounded like I was swapping an S3 for an S1W

6 grand for the S1

And I wouldn't let go of the S3 for less than 5 and a half either.

You can make a lot more if you sell all the extra's you got individually.

I know it's not my place, but I would recommend holding onto one of them, unless they've made your life hell just one too many times, haha.

Remember it’s only really worth what someone will actually pay for it.. just because you think it’s worth $xxxx amount, doesn’t mean you will actually ever get that price for it, today, tomorrow, or 10 years from now... nearly every bike depreciates as soon as you drive off the dealer lot let alone being 20 years old, but there are exceptions to that, see the ULTRA RARE bikes Court displayed, but most all Buell’s later than 1997 just aren’t in that rarefied air and market. Just look at the GORGEOUS nearly FLAWLESS 1995 S2 that Jerry2 is only asking $4k for with tons of specific extras... But I must say, good looking molten orange bike! Good luck in the trade or sale...

"Remember it’s only really worth what someone will actually pay for it.."

I was thinking as I was reading those prices... these bikes might be worth that much to us... but realistically we're biased and I don't expect to see amazing looking Buells sell for more than $4000-5000, even with nice upgrades. I've seen some gorgeous bikes with all kinds of nice parts sell for $4000 again and again.

Don't know what these ones sold for, just a quick skim through our classifieds.

This one was listed for $5500

This one was listed for $4000, not an S1w but does have thunderstorm heads and some other work.

IMHO...

Unfortunately, Tubers seem to be worth more in pieces than as a whole machine. As far as mods go, you will almost never recover any of their cost in the selling price. That goes for almost any motorcycle, almost...

The good news is they are a blast to ride, gas station talk is a common occurrence and (with the right care and feeding) are pretty rea$onable to maintain. Try finding parts for an RC30.

Bottom line for me is I love them and consider mine to be family heirlooms. We are merely custodians.

With all that said I would probably not go over $4500 for any tuber (except an RR).

Happy New Year. Cheers

It's worth what someone will pay, also works conversely. A motorcycle I want is worth what I'm willing to pay as well: ) I don't mind spending a lot on a bike to enjoy it, but I also don't want to worry about it. Such is the life of my last MV Agusta: (

I think if someone buys a bike for re-sale value then they are missing the point.

XB's are pretty much the same 'worth more in pieces', but Hell no I'm not tearing apart a good one for that! Buells have that perfect Venn diagram of cost, fun, and uniqueness for me.

I generally base estimates off arms length sales tempered with what attributes an individual bike has.

I would sell my S2 for less than $15,000 and no sane person would pay over $5,000.

It was the FIRST Buell in MOST the United States and at most the “Moto venues” in the USA.

That’s a big deal to me since my ass was on it.

To anyone else it’s a curiousity and worthless.

Unfortunately resale $$$ just aren’t there, buells are just an odd bike to most people. Most real motorcycle people know what they are and think they are cool and unique, god knows we all know they are something special... On both those bikes my personal $$ limit would be $3500 each.... in the past 1.5 years I’ve bought 4 complete running driving Buell’s for just over the price I bought my first one brand new for! just looked at NADA resale estimate and my 06 is “worth” under $2k! That bummed me out but like it was my first bike and I doubt I’ll ever sell it....

06 XB12ss brand new $12k out the door
09 1125r under 200 miles $5k
09 1125r 8500 miles $3k
95 s2 under 4000 miles $2.5k
00 M2 22000 miles $2.5k

And yes I know I can only put my ass on ONE at a time, but I find them all cool and beautiful and unique and engineering marvels! Oh and I might have a problem collecting, now if I could stop searching Craigslist daily, lol

Usually "collectible" sort of implies either stock, or else something particular makes it desirable, such as a known-provenance race bike. When's the last time your Buell was stock? For my Y2K M2 used, I paid about $4200 then spent about $5000 on 'upgrades' and now my bike would be lucky to sell for $2,000. A 1950's Vincent was recently listed locally for $100K, I looked up values and found an interesting article about collecting:

An S1W sold for 10k here in The Netherlands a few months ago. 12.2 in usd. That's in Europe, true. But still.

My S1W is not stock, but I have all the parts, rear fender, header/(giant)muffler, helmholtz air cleaner (toaster), stock ecm, pre-recall wp shock, wp legs, stock bars, grey recall swingarm (still in box), original battery strap and stock shift linkage. I have made no engine/trans changes except for the usual recall items, upgraded shifter detent, pushrod covers, XB rocker box, mikuni, force intake, etc. I retained all the parts replaced or upgraded on the engine as well.

I don't plan on selling it but it's kind of cool to have the oem stuff on hand. Can't say the same for the S2T, as it was a basket case when I got it.

Damn I'm in love with that S3. I'm all the way in California unfortunately!
Honestly I think you could get 6K for them during the riding season.
