So I have a 99 x1 and I have been thru 2 or 3 speed sensors since I have owned it and they all just quit but this time all the sudden my speedo is just very inaccurate like some times 20mph off so just trying to figure out what the cause could be?
I did pull the speedo sensor to see if maybe there was metal on the bottom but it looked fine.
Any ideas?
Thank you
Victor

check the wiring connections at the sensor and the meter

Connections seem to be fine.

Requires the Speedo wiring mod which Maz from the Emporium based in Manchester UK developed as a kit, basically it takes the feed from the CPS which is only 5v and eliminates the spike that blows your sensors, I have a copy of the wiring diagram, I'll look it out and see if I can post a picture of it

I do believe P/N 74402-95B was a revised part to eliminate the issue.

Vic not sure what to tell you the tach can be tested by using ECM SPY IIRC

Do you have access to a digital meter with frequency readout? to check the pickup

also as Steve suggested are you using the revised pickup?

Jim , my tach is fine and no digital meter here, I’m just hoping it’s not the speedo itself.
We did a 165 mile ride and my odo was like at 125 miles so like 40 miles off on my odo.
Do you think I should just buy the revised speed sensor?
Thanks for all your help.

Definitely sounds like sensor or wires

The speedo uses the pulses from the sensor to
position the pointer,

The odo counts the pulses for mileage
So I am leaning on erratic pulsing and loss of "data"

Thanks Jim for your input, sounds.
Went ahead and ordered a new speed sensor.
Victor.

Here's a link to the Regulator/Filter circuit that board member Reepicheap designed. After replacing 3 sensors, I installed this and haven't had to replace one in 17 years and about the same amount of miles(17K). Just saying if the upgraded part is unavailable.
