i removed all the body work on my 95' S2 to go through it and start cleaning her up. There is a black wire coming out of the harness and to the back as you can see in the picture. Don't know what it goes too. There is also what looks to be a broken bracket bolted on. Am I missing anything? Was something removed?

I don't have the same model but normally that black wires would be a ground, but it could be a trigger wire for a relay that was a plastic box and vibrations broke.Does you horn work? The big black box is the ignition module and that wire just may be a ground for it,..I'm sure in the service manual its all there IF its supposed to be there. It could be somethin a PO added on.. Lightin speedo may have relays/ breakers as swell.

I don't see the brain box in these other pictures, maybe it just doesn;t show, or its been relocated. All the pictures have the bolt nut and star washer. The black tab I am still thinking its a relay flange broken off where somebody had an alarm or me too lights or radio.. Trace the other end of the wire.if its not hooked to anything, take it off ,that way the bike is lighter and it will go faster....Maybe somethin from the volt reg thats not used or should be and isn;t hooked up? you cant never have too many grounds....

That black plastic is what's left of the broken relay. The relay is bolted on using that screw and nut, but the relay goes on the FRONT of the white frame bracket up under the battery. It has some kind of rubber grommet for vibration I guess, as I can wiggle the relay. The wires to the relay appear to have 90 degree ends on them.I know this is correct as I'm the original owner.

Thanks guys for sending me in the right direction. She needs a good bath. After she gets it I'll look for the flasher unit. It's interesting that the wire is in the harness like it is stock. There were auxiliary lights and a couple of extra added switches on the front cowl which I am replacing. I took it all off for now so I can inspect and make sense of things. Especially to help me figure out why the tail light stop light stays on. Have to check the front brake switch.

OK, since I'm bored out of my mind today, I looked at my bike closely with a flashlight. The relay on the front side of the frame mount below the battery that I spoke of is the starter relay mounted on a rubber stud. The nut you see the plastic piece mounted to is the nut holding the rubber stud on to the frame mount. The starter relay should have a black plastic plug with a black, orange, green, and black/red wire in the plug. That would be original.

Thanks Jerry, yeah I have that relay in the right place, lol. I traced the wire, it goes up to the headlight, ends in a male spade to no where, I have no idea at this point

Thats it then ,I was correct,it had aux light and switches which mean relays as well and if the wire goes through the harness it just means somebody had it apart and fished it through.

On my S1, I actually moved the flasher to the front of the bike behind the cowl. I always wondered about the seemingly random configuration of the welded on mounting tabs for the relays.

Is the red box called the turn signal cancel unit that sits by the ignition module also the turn signal relay?

Yes it is! Electronic turn signal with cancelling.
S2 and earlier Buells had Harley-Davidson turn signal switch sets. One switch on each side, which must be held to blink. Released is off.
S2 got the module, so there should not be a flasher relay.
RSS/RS1200 did not, and the turn signal switches which must be held to blink. Not fun to do while maneuvering. Maybe that is why Harley riders seldom use their blinkers. ; )
