So my temp sensor is bad. How do I know? Runs fine when it's disconnected, goes to poop when I plug it in.

How long can I leave it unplugged? They aren't cheap or plentiful. Will it cause damage or throw a code? If I run open loop, that should kind of disable it and the o2 sensor, right?

Thanks in advance for your help and input.

St Paul H-D/Buell. $80.00

Don't know if there is/what a replacement would be. Now if it was the O2 sensor . . .

Yeah, trying to avoid the cost and get confirmation on the ECM settings..

If it's anything like the ECMs I've dealt with in the past, disabling a circuit should put you in "limp home" mode. I wouldn't ride it like that, if this is the case.

Sorry, I know that didn't answer your question(s), but they are available.

As an aside, you can try going to an H-D dealer and say "Uh, you got one of those head temp things for a Sportster?". Could be less expensive.

Anyway, yeah, you should/could get a code. When mine failed on my '01 X-1, I didn't get a code, just the crappy running. Saved by Al at American Sport Bike.

Could cause damage if a really lean condition or high outside temps/low speed were involved, but they would be extreme.

An area where I am not comfortable, other than remove/replace.

Hope this helps, Dave

no codes, yet, but I was getting a flickering engine light and a few O2 sensor lean or inactive messages. AFV is at the limit set, I suppose trying to make it rich, based on bad info from the temp sensor. Just idling, though, much better when I unplug the temp sensor. Should I ride it just to see what code I get or if the AFV changes? I'll end up getting another sensor (this one is a replacement for the original, maybe 10 years ago?) but for the time being, if I run open loop, it's kinda like having a carb, right?

took it for a hard but short ride. Didn't get hot, no codes. Ran pretty well, actually. My guess is that it wasn't long enough to cause any issues. with no temp input, will it run rich, thinking it's always cold? The bad sensor reads 32K ohms at ambient temp. Plugging it in puts it in limp/skip spark mode. Is it reading too hot?

The engine temp sensor is a crude measuring device at best.

Per my '01 X-1 service manual, the resistance should be 41.3K ohms at 77 deg F. But, the reading can be +/- 20% and still be in acceptable range. So your 32K ohms is still in compliant range.

And all of that is just a mental exercise, as you know that your bike runs poorly with it plugged in, good with it unplugged, so the resistance reading is academic. FWIW, yours is reading hot, but only about 15ish deg F.

yeah, something is screwy. The O@ sensor is reading lean and trying to make it rich, and the temp sensor is putting it immediately into limp mode. New intake seals, so good there. New temp sensor on the way.

IIRC if disconnected the ecu goes to the coldest head temp setting and adds a ton of fuel. Did you look at what the sensor was reading with Ecm-Spy to see if it is the problem? What was the AFV?

yes, ran best between warm up and warmed up. AFV was at the upper limit, didn't run it much without the temp sensor so I don't know what the sensor data was. I have a new sensor now, though.

Not sure what you mean by the upper limit? But if the number is way above 100 you have something cuasing a really lean condition and the ecu is adding a tone of fuel to make up for it.

so at some point in the past, I had set the upper and lower AFV limits to 105 and 95, and it was at 105 when I checked it. not sure what it would go to if It wasn't limited. How do I remove the limits? I have both ECMSpy and ECMDroid.

new temp sensor works much better. Ohmed it out against the new one and they seemed close... some other problem with the old one maybe. Anyhoo, USPS seems to have lost my new injectors, so I ordered from another vendor. Anybody know the exact replacement for an X1?
