Will this item work? It has an option for a Lightning, and I'm working on a '99 X1.

It won't work, the XB engines had an additional threaded boss on their primary cover for those shifters to thread into that the tuber engines don't have. I tried making an adapter plate to try and make one work after having seen a bunch of XR1200 guys make some really nice looking ones, but it just wouldn't shift well.

This is the shifter you need if you want to replace the boomerang. They made 2 different lengths, one for the X1 and one for the M2/S3. You need the longer version that's in the pictures:

That's the actual lever, but that doesn't include the pivot/hardware

Well, crap. I can't find anything in my budget. I suppose I could make my own lever, but still need a linkage and whatever it's called that goes on the shift drum. Anybody got a line on a used but complete setup?

I searched for a long time, they're hard to come by. They do pop up on here and on ebay every so often but you've gotta watch out for them. I feel like you'll probably end up paying close to $100 unless you get lucky.

The banke style look super nice, but they've got the price tag to match. To be honest I had one on my bike previously, and mine didn't shift as well as the updated Buell shifter does. Some people have amazing things to say about them though, so maybe it was just me. Once I finally got it dialed in perfectly, the boomerang shifter was actually the smoothest shifting I had on my S1, I just got tired of watching that thing rattling around all the time.

Not sure why the updated M2 shifter would not fit on the X1? If not, maybe it could be adapted.

The length of the shift arms are different for m2s3 and s1x1.

Looks like for cost and availability, I'll have to re-bush the boomerang. Is the necessary bronze bushing (I currently have a wallered out plastic one) a special item or might the hardware store have it? Also, is the upper part supposed to be wavy or straight?

They used to be all over ebay. Don’t see any now.

There are some nice shifters available though.

New bushings from Ace hardware. Took som 'adjustment' but wow. A world of difference. Cheap too. Seeing how the nylon ones lasted 20 years, I guess these bronze ones are good for at least that long. Doesn't make the boomerang LOOK any better, tho.

I had found some bronze bushings at the hardware store as well. They needed trimmed down and the internal diameter needed increased slightly, but they worked.

At least your X1 will take the nice aluminum. The steel shifter on the S1 is a bit of an eyesore in my opinion, and the aluminum version won't fit on the S1 frame.

You're right, I should've been more specific. I meant the aluminum boomerang. I currently have one of the upgraded straight shifter on my S1, and it works great, but before that I tried putting an aluminum boomerang from an X1 on my bike and it wouldn't fit. It would hit the frame before I could get the footpeg fully tightened.
