I see that Kmbuell has a set of tuber wheels listed for sale and they are described as "Castalloys". My 96 S2 has Marchesini's on it that look very much like the wheels Kmbuell has listed. Can anyone give me a quick "Buell wheel 101" so I can better understand what wheels were on what bikes and the differences in each? Are the Marchesini, Castalloy, and Performance Machine wheels the only three types available, and was there a choice of what type you wanted or was it you get what you get and like it when you bought a new Buell back in the day?

I don't know a ton about the wheels, but since no one else has responded, I'll pass around what I believe I know, and hopefully someone more knowledgeable will come along eventually and either correct me, or confirm and provide a little more detailed information.

There are 3 wheels, the Marchesini, the cast alloy, and the PM wheels. I believe bikes first came with the Marchesini wheels, and were later replaced with the cast alloy wheels. The cast alloy wheels look just like the Marchesini wheels only without the logo on them, and I'm pretty sure they're a cheaper copy of them. the PM wheels were an add on option, I don't believe any models came with these wheels originally.

My 97 S1 also has the Marchesini wheels on it.

^ Pretty much accurate.

^ The PM wheels were, indeed, an option. The real early tube framed bikes (RS/RSS) were all factory equipped with PM wheels. The later tube framed bikes were available with PM wheels from the factory - I believe on nearly all models (although I seem to recall hearing somewhere - whether accurate or not - that M2's weren't).

Pretty much accurate and “Castalloy” is a proper noun. . . The name of the company, in Adelaide, Australia. . . That makes them.

And ....PM wheels were different on RS/RSS and later Buell models.

This is great info you guys! If the PM wheels were an option, were they dealer installed or could you order a bike built from the factory with the wheels you wanted and the color you wanted?

One of my great pleasures at Buell was being involved with the “Rainbow Paint Program”. . . .it was a nightmare that didn’t go as planned ...but was an absolute hoo5 and is responsible for some interesting and unusual Buells.

I sold my set of S2 PMs to Tommy Escobia in Atlanta. I switched to the marchesini. They were an original early set that had the DOT stamped plates glued to them (it was a very early recall). The dunlops even had 94 date codes! Here she is with the white sneakers : )

I have a very early YJP bike. It wasn’t as yellow as William’s. It was also four different colors, each body part was a different shade. And the two worst matches were the tank and tail.
In late ‘95 Rickie M and I decided to paint our S2s. I had heard the pearl in YJP was Kosmoski, and I lived in the area so I went to talk to Jon. He laughed, and told me the product mismatch was the cause, then he said want to see something neat? He showed me the new yellow pearl he was introducing. I bought 2 quarts on the spot. Rickie new a guy who worked for some of the big car guys doing illustrations and had him do some. Rickie’s was then turned into an SSR2 single seater. Both bodies were bonded into one piece units and got pretty splashy multi-colored paint jobs.
Good times! Mine stayed that way for a few years and then I did a single seat conversion with a mold done off Rickie’s bike. Then, I got transferred to NC and Rickie wrapped it up with a Tanglo pearl paint job. I have both bikes now, in storage.

I still remember Rickie's alt profile, "D_bag" . Kevin have you talked to him at all recently? Haven't heard of him in ages, hope he's doing well.

I had my bodywork repainted l. It was bubbled everywhere, the front fairing was cracked badly and was repainted on the mirror mounts to black with white pinstripe, ugh. The tail section was sanded down at the oil cap, not sure what that was about, but it was all fixed up before paint. My body pieces were all slightly different shades as well. I told them to just get as pearl as they could get and had the tank decals repopped. They didn’t quite orient the tank decals correctly but the paint came out nice. Not near the pearl as before, now more deep metallic. But it’s ok : )

Williamscottrobertson - 0ff topic, but I need to know. Where does the elastic strap go on your tank bra? I picked one up to protect the paint and have it installed on a spare S2 tank cover, but I'm scratching my head to how the elastic strap gets tension...

It’s been a while since I installed it but I believe it goes up over the front of the tank then slides underneath. I’ll see if I still have the instruction sheet. I usually hang on to those.

This reminds me of years gone by and sitting in the bleachers with binoculars watching “Jungle Pam” Hardy guiding “Jungle Jim” Liberman backing up his funny car to the start line after a burnout. All eyes were glued on her and not Jim and his funny car.
Probably not many guys on the board are old enough to remember those drag racing days.

Good to know she is still out there kicking!
I saw them at Twin City Dragways sometime in the early 70's.
I loved it, my girlfriend, not so much!

We used to go to National Trail Raceway in Kirkersville Ohio nearly every weekend and always went to the Springnationals back when it was held there. We saw Jungle Jim many times. Hemi Under Glass, Little Red Wagon, Bob Glidden, Grumpy Jenkins, Sox & Martin, Ohio George Montgomery, Don Garlits, and so many other great cars and names.
