You know ... I don't think God wants me to have a Buell. Today I hit a pretty bad pot hole and didn't think much about it. Then at a fuel stop I noticed some fluid leaking. When I got down to look at it I saw something hanging from the other side of the bike. Here it is.

Same thing happened to me riding back home to East Troy from Iowa back in '97 or '98. I didn't know exactly what happened to cause it, just noticed that it started handling like a wet noodle. Band-aided it with some threaded rod from an implement store just down the road from the Sprint Car Hall of Fame.

So, parts are available to fix it. Or, will I just have to figure something out.

I'm seeing lots of rear shocks on ebay. What other models will fit an S2?

Chewy, here's one that may help, may not, there are two recalls on the 1996 Buell S2. One regarding rear shock
http://www.recalldata.org/1996/30579.shtml
Anyway, may not help, but who knows, if the recall wasn't completed on your machine...

I seem to remember that American Sportbike used to sell some upgrade parts for the WP shock, check with Al.

Penske shocks are the best, a little pricey but worth it, more adjustable and durable.

If I remember correctly there was a late model Showa kit made for each model but I believe it was combined for the S3 & S2.. I measured several and they were the same lenght but maybe the valving was different. The big thing is the front mount is different for all the later Showas..

Before you buy a shock check your recalls!
I’m pretty sure all the WP shocks on the S2’s, and S1’s were recalled, Last time I checked Recalls never expire, so Buell should replace your shock at no charge to you.

I run the Hyperpro race push shock, and link system on mine.

Chad :

First try what Mike suggested , ask , nicely if the recall can still be completed at your dealer ( assuming you are in close proximity to a cooperative dealer ) . If that fails , you may contact me off line , I have two S2 shocks , in excellent condition , they were listed on ebay and didn't fetch any bids , both are in excellent condition , one is WP , the other is a first generation Showa .

Well, I'm deploying in a few days. It's in storage and will have to wait a few months to get fixed. I'll have plenty of time to ponder what's next for this bike.

to Chewy and others with original style shock:

1 month ago my rear shock bit the dust (external spring type) and I didn't have the cash to buy a new one at the time, so I checked my local HD shop and they immediately pulled up 5 open recall items on my bike, mainly the rear shock and swingarm assembly.

The interesting part is that I had previously went to another HD dealer this summer and had them check the recalls, and they found none on my bike. Either they did not want to deal with me and my bike at the time, or they are idiots (The Woodlands HD, TX). Obviously your bike has not had these services performed and inform them of this. It took the shop about 3 weeks to receive all the parts and 4 days to do everything on the bike.

Long story short- I got a brand new shock and a much better handling S2 out of the deal for free, although after talking to the mechanic who worked on my bike I don't think he had ever seen an S2 before ripping mine apart.

the new style shock isn't as elegant as the original WP but it seems to perform up to par with the WP.

good luck with the recalls and don't take any crap from your HD dealer!

Does anyone know if there was any difference between the second generation Showa upgrade kits? They look the same externally but are there valve/spring/mounting differences?

Cheers

Thanks for all of the input. Right now I'm in North Carolina right now and will be heading to CJTF HOA (Africa) in a few days. I'll have to resolve my shock issue next summer when I return.

Carey,
I just bought a Penske on Ebay for$450. It should be on it's way this week. With the 99 swingarm i'm upgrading to, it should handle much better.

Also gotta install my Racetec springs.

Looking foward to having x-mass week off. That's when this swap will take place.

The shock i'm getting has a red spring, and i noticed yours is blue. Other than the color, what's the difference between the two of them?

Chewy, Was the lower rod the only thing that broke? Could you get some grade 5 or 8 round stock and thread it?

Just thought you might like to know that Grade 8 all thread [and lesser grades] is available to folks who need it. That way you don't need a machinist to tread the rods. I can't give you any names of suppliers though.

Howdy from Djibouti everybody. You ever seen the show MASH? It's kind of like that, only the people here aren't as funny. Really though, it's not the end of the earth ... but you can see it from here.

Hey,
My deployment has been cut short and I will be back sooner than planed. Anyone have any shocks for sale? I would prefer another WP, but if it takes too long I will take whatever I can get.

I have a box of spare S-2 shock rods. If you need one, just drop me a note.
