The S2 tank is metal and the S1 oil tank is plastic.

You can't mistake an S2 oil tank for anything else. Like William said, it's metal, and not painted so it's still silver and in a triangle shape because it mounted on one side of the subframe. The S1 tanks are black plastic and more of a random shape. The S1 tanks look very similar to the M2 tanks, but they're not interchangeable. The S1 tank is the only one that'll fit on the S1 frame, so you'll need to spend a bit of time looking at used ones on ebay or somewhere to really compare the differences so you know what you're looking at when you see one.

X1 and M2 have plastic ones also.

You're probably not looking to spend that much, but Metmachex Engineering also make a beautiful aluminium oil tank replacement.

IIRC everything after S2, had a plastic tank. They're roto-cast to fit their specific frame designs.

I have two custom aluminum tanks, one is for an X1, I believe the other is for an S1. Send a PM if you’re interested.
Thanks - R
