Which is nothing too special if I were in the States where these are, for some unfathomable reason, still sold for next to nothing, but in Europe, where I live, they are hard to find and expensive indeed. Makes me very pleased with my purchase. Even though it's basically been standing still for 9 years and it needs some TLC. Still, it even came with the original airbox and plastics!

Here's a few pictures. Anything you guys can tell me about this bike? Should be a 1997 MY. Shouldn't it have that open spring white shock, or were they shipped with this closed shock as well?

It looks a little bit grimy, but I will leave that mostly as is, just need it to get back in shape mechanically. Which means fluids, filters, brake fluid, front fork fluid and seals maybe, tires of course, brake pads, battery, spark plugs, cleaning out the carb and fuel tank. Etc.

Couldn't be happier. I'm in the process of selling my 2009 Scg. But this S1 will join my X1 and my Ulysses as part of the, hopefully, permanent collection.

That is the shock that was installed as part of a recall.

Is that a front a Dunlop D207? Those are what came with my 2000X1.

All I'm saying is I think those tires are OLD and not to be trusted.
Probably grip as well as if they were made of Oak : )

Hahahahaha . . . . . very cool !

Pretty much identical to the one Mr. Buell made the impromptu appearance on national television on at Pocono Raceway in 1997!

Billet Metallic is the color . . . .

Yeah, those tires are the first things to go. For sure. I'm picking the bike up on Saturday. I can try and see if they have the production dates stamped on. Should be good for a laugh.

Thanks!

That's not bad company to be in. I definitely did not have the luxury of picking a color here (there's just one other S1 for sale here and, in dollars, he's asking 8.5 grand), but I really dig this grey color. Looks classy.

Don't suppose there's any pictures of that Pocono raceway moment?

As part of your reconditioning, pay attention to the transmission output shaft bearing. My bike (98 S1W) had a failure there. I bought it in 2006 with 1100 miles on it; similar "standing still" situation. Sitting on the sidestand, that bearing tends to drain all its oil back into the transmission. Mine lasted about a week of riding, before the bearing (and thus the rear tire) locked up on the road one day.

I run Michelin Pilot Roads on all my street Buells and loveloveLOVE them. Get the correct size, set your suspension, ride, grin, repeat.

Nice score!

That's a good tip Ratbuell. Are you talking about replacing that bearing outright or ehm, would it suffice to get in there and relube it somehow?

Nice score!

And thanks!

(also a big fan of Michelin Pilot Roads btw, fantastic tire)

Love the bike. Don't want to tell you what to do with it but please for all that is Holy get rid of that "hypercharger". Carbon can ham (the best IMO) or even a force winder.

Also on the list of things to do, don't worry. That thing is going in the bin. My X1 had one (a hypercharger) when I bought it and I changed that for a Forcewinder as well.

Options here are the oval air cleaner (if I can find one), a Forcewinder or the original airbox. I might try the original plastic one first actually.

>>>>Don't suppose there's any pictures of that Pocono raceway moment?

Let's hope not . . . . . we took a brisk ass chewing over that one.

The idea of doing a wheelie, down the front straight, on the parade lap was dandy . . . the execution kind of came unraveled.

I'd ridden all the way from Topeka, KS to Pocono, at the request of Tina Daniels of the Laughlin-Constable Agency to host a group of Buell Riders on a "meet-greet_ ride". They expected 15 folks . . . I rolled up that morning to find well over 100 folks . . . including the debut appearance of "Mr. Jolt Cola" . . . . who some may recall had his wife following him everywhere filming his antics years before YouTube existed . . . . .

The ride was essentially a mile long, testosterone filled equivalent of the Joey Chitwood show.

In addition to Erik's stunt gone bad . . . .it was a day where I did, what was likely, the stupidest move in my "professional" riding career . . . . it made the pages of Backroads magazine . . . . but, Brian and Shira mistook stupidity for skill. I was an idiot.

Fortunately I came away fine and left before the race started to make it back to Topeka, KS from Pocono for work the next day.

Those were great times . . . . . even with a few snags.

Great memories and . . . by the way . . . the Billet Metallic, introduced in 1997, was an awesome color.

Quite a story, Court. Wish I had been there to witness some of it, but I was just 13 years old when all of that went down :P. (Not to mention on the other side of the Atlantic.)

What kind of move was it that you pulled off?

Kind of funny to think I was just 13 years old when this bike rolled off the line.

Hahahahaha . . . well, your bike didn't really roll "off" the line . . . the entire line moved.

Your Buell started on a metal cart . . . the cart got rolled along to about 9 stations.

When it got to the end . . . .it went one of a couple places . . .

Rolls

Hospital

Then it went to see the keenest eyes in the joint . . . .Nate and Des . . . . . then onto a truck and off to a dealer.

No zerk fitting here, but some Uly guys do that. Me, I took advantage of a machinist who owed me one, and a cartridge transmission out of the bike...and had it back-cut and micropolished. Sooooo slick-shifting now... : )

I wasn't going to comment on the hypercharger on your new baby but...ugh. Definitely lose it. And try to find an original hugger with the license plate mount - they look SO cool, and really make the S1 in my mind.

I lucked out and the previous owner already went out of his way to find those parts. The original hugger is going back on the bike if its condition allows it.

Nice score!! Sweet love the color! I have a 2000 X1 and love it but I've always wanted a S1. I almost had one a few months ago for like $1500 I was gonna go grab it because the kid had no idea what he had. THEN it turned into a bidding war "sorry someone offered me $2000" and i was out!

I have a 97 like that except in snap red. A real blast to ride. BUT - I would advise you condition your ass for the S1 seat by installing a 2x4 plank on a bicycle and riding it around for a few weeks before hand. ; )

Oh, this is something else you guys might know: would a stock X1 exhaust fit this S1, or were there significant differences in length and mounting points?

I have one lying around and I'm not sure if I want to have the S1 be as loud as it is right now with that Supertrapp exhaust.

A better idea is to adjust your supertrapp.
Removing disks make it quieter, right?
That was the whole gimmick with those mufflers.

Once you get the sound right and the intake where you want it, you'll most likely have to rejet the carb since those hyperchargers are uhh less than good.

I know it was rejetted ten years ago for this setup. I don't know however, if after ten years, I need to replace some or most of that stuff anyway.

Wonder if it would need to be rejetted again if I were to go with the stock airbox. Probably, right?

Haha a 2x4 is more comfortable than what comes on most bicycles. I also spent a ton of times on bicycles so I've yet to find any motorcycle seat that didnt seem comfortable by comparison.

Very nice bike, looks extremely similar to my silver 97 S1. It's been a great bike, but has definitely needed a bit of love to get it road worthy. No surprises for you though if you've already got an X1.

You don't sit on an S1, you move around and hang off.

"one cheek seat".

The supertrapp does get quieter as you remove discs. It also increases backpressure, so you'll want to lean it out a bit as you remove discs. They can be very mellow, and they do carry good torque unlike a lot of aftermarket stuff.

An S1 has a 2" header collector. An X1, which will have Thunderstorm heads, will have a 2.5" collector. Muffler won't fit. Header won't either, the T-bend header on the X1 is for the later frame and the S-bend header on the S1 is for the earlier frame. If you want to run an X1 muffler you have to find an (unobtanium) 98 S1W header, or go full-on (also unobtanium) Buell Race exhaust, S-bend, header and muffler together.

Pull some discs to get it to sound the way you want - it's free and easy : ) Then jet accordingly. May not have to change much - I've found 45/190/2.5 turns out is a good all-around setup. I run 48/190/2.5 on my S1W because it's a thunderstorm motor with race intake, race ignition, and full race exhaust and it just idles better that way, but the 45/190/2.5 setup works well in my M2, my (R.I.P.) thunderstormed S2, and my buddy's bone-stock 96 S2T with a supertrapp as the only change. If it loads up at idle, drop in a 42 slow jet instead of the 45. If you have to run it a long time with the choke on to warm up, step up to the 48.

Thanks for all that, Ratbuell. Very helpful information. Quieting down that Supertrapp might not be a bad idea. Like you said, it's free, and it's not a bad looking pipe.
