Hello all,
New to the forum and first time poster.
I'll cut to the chase. There is a 2001 Buell S3 Thunderbolt for sale in my area which is around San Jose, California. The bike does have a Supertrapp exhaust and only a little over 7000 miles, but I think that the owner is asking a bit too much at $2950. I am wondering what you fellows would think it's worth.
Looking forward to hearing back from everyone.
-Kirk

P.S. The bike is in very good condition.

If it's a T with the bags and lowers in good condition, as you said, that would be a good deal in my book. Still a good price if it's a regular S3. Has a lot to do with the location. You can't give Buell's away in MN.

If it has the bags and in good shape it’s worth the asking price.

You could probably find one cheaper, but only by a few hundred, and then you would have to transport.... so if it’s close, in good shape, has the bags, it’s really probably worth asking. Plus probably a “little” wiggle room on cash purchases....

It’s certainly not overpriced unless it’s a roached basket case!

Thank you for the quick responses.
Unfortunately, it does not have bags or lowers. As far as I know that is, I haven't asked yet. Do you think that this should affect the price at all?

That sounds like a great price for only 7000 miles.

I paid $2700 for a 2700 mile 00 s3 without any touring stuff, SRP rear shock, bone stock. Felt like I stole it but that was probably market :/

as many have said, depends on where you are located. Last summer I paid $2000 for my 1999 S3 with only 3300 original miles. This included all touring stuff except side fairings. It needed tires but otherwise was perfect. Prior to me purchasing the bike, it was listed on craigslist for months and months. pic below shows how I got the bike (except that I added the Twin Motorcycles shock after purchase).

I'm always amused by these "what's it worth" questions when folks have never laid eyes, ears, or hands on the vehicle in question. That's what NADA and KBB are for - dead-cold estimates for a year/make/model. Anything more specific? GO LOOK AT THE VEHICLE IN QUESTION.

Happens all the time to me in sales - customer hasn't laid eyes on the bike we're selling, heard it run, nothing, but they still try to knock the price down before even stepping foot in the door.

I've seen nice S3's languish on Craigslist for months at $2500. The reality is that Buells old and new are soft on price all around...with the possible exception of a nice S1 or especially S1W. I think this will change as the bikes approach 40 years old, but until then they just don't seem to be considered broadly collectible yet.

Howdy all. I just thought I should let you know that I ended up picking the bike up this past weekend for $2,250. The battery is tired which is a quick replacement, but I later found that the brake light wire is broken at the connection to the light, also a quick fix. The last problem I found which may or may not be a quick fix is that the couple times I've ridden it around the block it pushed the dip stick out and was seeping oil all over the left side of the reservoir, frame, ground, etc. I was originally told that it was a clogged breather, but upon further inspection I think that it is just over-full. I'm guessing that the previous owner made the mistake of checking the oil while the bike was cold and filled it to what would have been the "proper" level on the dip stick.
Any thoughts are welcome. If draining the oil and adding the correct amount doesn't solve the issue I will make a new thread.
I will also post pics once the issue is resolved.
Thank you.

I agree, just sounds like he over filled it. Suck a little out of the tank and give it another try! Congrats on the purchase, looking forward to seeing some pictures.

Dipstick popping out is almost always caused from being over filled with oil.

Sounds like you got a great deal!!

sounds like a great price to me... the cheapest Buell by me starts at $3500 and goes up to $6000 for most Ulysses. For me anything under $3000 is a STEAL.

If it really is in good condition then it's a steal at three grand.
