My 1998 Buell S1W that i just purchased this summer was sent to Motorcycle Performance Magazine for an article by Dave Ferrato, published in March 1999 (volume 23, issue 3). Along with the bike, I got alot of cool documents including the paperwork from the factory, documents pertaining to the accessories and also some original DYNO sheets from 1999.

My bike was run on the dyno in stock form, then again with the complete Buell factory race kit that included (2.5" headers, race ECM and CF intake). The bike also has the Buell race rearsets.

Here are some copies of the dyno showing significant increase in HP at low RPM (almost 30 HP gain).

dyno done at Mattei's Cycle Supply.

Pretty cool.
You can really feel the difference with the race kit just using the old butt dyno but it's nice to see figures to back it up.

Looks like the first line is the dyno conditions - temp, barometer, elevation, correction factor. "ndl 2" is likely 2nd slot for the clip on the needle; "200mn" is 200 main jet; "3t out" is 3 turns out. Not sure what "as" is though...

Seems to have been tested with a V&H exhaust, K&N filter, and I'm guessing "fact jk" is factory jet kit.

The dips on yours are shift points, looks like second through fifth gears. SS, not sure. AG = All Gears. RO = Roll On, likely 5th gear.

Thanks Rat. Mine dont show torque values like Steves. Looks like about 86hp at nearly 130mph?
The bike came with a 200 main, a 46 pilot and the clip in the middle on the needle with three washers. Which essentially, would put the clip on the 1st (or 5th) position? (Furthest from the top) So why use washers?
That raises the needle making it richer, correct?
I removed that needle and replaced it with the xl needle. I was tempted to put the other one back in just to see if there was any difference. Seems to run pretty good though.

Washers raise the needle, making it a little richer in the 1/4-1/2ish throttle range. When I got my bike it mostly ran well, but it had this bad sputter around 2500-3000rpm. If I was accelerating through that range it was fine, but when I was riding a more steady speed, it would keep popping and the bike would lurch a bit. I stuck 2 washers under the needle and it was smooth as could be.

When I switched back to the stock exhaust and airbox, I switched the pilot jet from 48 to 42 and removed the washers. It had a bit of a sputter again, so I put one of the washers back in. It's a lot better but still does it occasionally. I ordered a 45 pilot jet and plan on putting the second washer back in there to see if it runs a little smoother.

I guess I don't understand. if you have the clip mid (3rd)position on needle and you add 3 washers, you're essentially moving the clip to the 5th position on needle. why even use washers? what am I missing here?

ooooh, my mistake, I thought you were just asking what the point of washers on the needle is. If you're asking why you would use washers when the needle already has a clip, I assume they just didn't know what they were doing.

I would assume the 3rd/middle position is the default spot? They might've had the washers under their original needle, and just transferred them over to the new one, having no idea what the clip was for.

The fact that they didnt know what they were doing makes more sense. If youre going to have the clip in the mid position and use three washers, which moves it to the 5th position on the needle.....just move the clip. If you need more, add washer(s). Right?
Theres a dyno in Jamestown about 45 mins from here. Ive heard good things about him. Ill get my bike there eventually. Im very curious.

A washer could serve as a mid-point between clip slots.

Chart below from my '95 S2 about 2003 (Hal's dyno)

I can see using one washer to get in between slots. that makes sense.
