I found out after the fact that the 96 PM wheels wont mount up to a 98 without a spacer.. Im guessin a spacer on the caliper side to space the bracket away from the wheel? The Marchesini {sp?} is flat with no flange/lip.
Am i calling these correctly? These are the nuke blue wheels that came stock on the white lightning.
Are the PM spacers still available? Would anything be needed for the front wheel?

Youd think id learn to research before attempting such task.
But noooo....

Yes you need the pm wheel spacer in the rear. I am not sure if there is a difference in fronts. Lance at stpaul hd has new pm wheels so he might have the spacer you seek!

no spacer brake side on rear is correct. early bikes had speedo cables vs electric... is that where the spacer needs to go?

I did see that thread. Thats exactly what my wheel looks like but when i install it, the mount contacts wheel and it wont turn. That is an x1 though. The mount has to be different if a spacer isnt being used.
Ill see if Lance has any layin around. I have a buddy that machines aluminum, if i could get the dimensions, im certain he could make one. Unless theyre steel?
If you look at the second photo in the link, you can see the (3/16”?)lip that looks like it comes off with the 6 allen heads. The celiper bracket has to be different between the s1 and x1 because that lip is definitely in the way on mine.
Speedo is on front fork on s1’s or behind starter on m2/x1.

you all were correct. no spacer. so I'm at a total loss here.
gonna try tomorrow to do this again, maybe I missed something.
can anyone tell me if the rear caliper brackets for the Nissin and PM are interchangeable?

Oooh man, so much for me telling you everything should swap over no problem. All of the swingarms have the same internal dimensions, even if you switch between steel and aluminum swingarms, the distance from inside edge to inside edge should be the same, so I'm not sure how they wouldn't be fitting. Even if they have different width spacers on the belt side, you could obviously just swap those spacers with the wheels, which means that maybe the different bikes come with different length brake calipers mounts? Have you considered just switching rear brakes with the wheels? If you keep the brake bracket/wheel/spacer combos together, it'd have to fit in the swingarms, right?

I could see there being an issue if you bought a new set of wheels and didn't have the spacers to match, but if the wheels fit on one of your bikes, it'd have to be able to move to the other. I guess if life was always that simple I could've put this stock exhaust on my bike without having to make a new rear mount that was an inch longer than the stock bracket. We all need a little mystery in our lives.

I know right?
The issue isnt the swingarm dimension, its the distance between inside of caliper mount and outside of wheel.
Like there really needs to be a spacer between mount and wheel.
Oh its personal now. And i have the weekend to decypher this.
Ill be back monday with news hahaha

Thanks man. Thats what my 96 looks like. Heres what i have so far...

In the 2nd pic, you can see the bracket nearly touching the inside of rotor. Last pic shows the bracket hitting the lip on hub. But if the inside of the bracket isnt hitting the bearing, its too close to see. It looks like the bracket needs to go in further towards wheel to center on rotor, but at the same time away from wheel as to hit hit lip on hub.

looks like you need a different bracket.

use ebay to search for different year parts and see if you can spot the differences.

here is a pic i just took. hard to get light in there.

Seems like everything on ebay is what i have. I need the bottom end of your bracket and the top of mine.
I could change out the entire rear system. Bet that would fix it.

There are at least two different brake brackets, one for the Brembo “95-‘97 and the one for the Nissen 98 up. I thought they were pretty much interchangeable, but maybe not. And be done the swap back and forth with no issues, but I’ve not tried a Nissen on an earlier bike.

Need to mill the thickness down to match the last pic. Solved!!
Never knew there were different castings.

Im gona go check out my buddys s1w. He has the same set up.
I saw a pic of a new pm wheel on Lance’s site. Notice the bearings are nearly flush and theres no snap ring. Even if i did this though, it would solve the clearance issue but the notch for pads at top of bracket wouldnt sit inside rotor.
Im not sure milling is the answer. There has to be another way.

If i bring the bearings out a bit more like in photo, id have to space the rotor away from the wheel. Then id prob need a thicker spacer on the otherside to keep the belt aligned.
Or, change calipers and use the 96 bracket.

Its pretty clear the difference in the brackets.
Those bearings in lances pic may not be set correctly they are a marketing picture.

That makes sense.
The differences in thickness are prob related to the differences in the brackets themselves. One being for the brembo and the other for the nissin.
If i start milling away material, itll prob take away the integrity of the bracket, no? Especially where its hogged out in the center.
If the brembo bracket would mate to the nissin caliper, idve had this done last week hahah

So i found the issue.
The lip that hits the caliper mount is sticking up too high on mine. My buddys is a heavy 16th lower.
Ill wait til riding season is over and revisit it then.
I still dont know why this is why it is but at least i know what it is : )
Thanks for all the assistance

I'm guessing if the caliper is pressing against the brake rotor, that the lip on your wheel must be keeping that bracket from even hitting the bearing. Hopefully reducing that lip is enough to give you a gap between the bracket and the wheel, and most the caliper over so it's not rubbing the rotor.

Like you said, the easy answer is just to swap rear brakes with the wheels, but if you want to keep the brakes on the bikes they came from, you'll have to either find a new bracket, or do some machine work on the lip of the wheel.

Also.... Was this the first bike of the two you tried to put together? You said the 96 PM wheel won't fit on the 98. Did you happen to try the 98 parts on the 96? You might go through all the work of fixing this one, then realize you whole a whole separate clearance issue on the other bike.

The bracket does rest on the bearing. it also rubs ever so slightly on that lip on the hub. enough so that when I torqued the axle, it was bound tight. if I shave a 16th off, I should be fine and still have enough meat left to hold that snap ring.
this was the only way I tried. I ended up just swappin tires and left the other stuff alone for now. its a winter project.
but you were mostly correct in that everything should swap over. just in this case, it was a bit more pissin around.
