Does anyone know the reason behind the different orientations of the voltage regulator? Does this have to do with the battery relocation kit? Which is the updated/latest version? My battery on the s1w sits on the narrow side with the posts at 12 and 6. The regulator sits beside it on its back side with the face up. Some sit with the face out to the right side.
The sticker on the stem says june 98 if that means anything.

There is a new relocating bracket you can use if you replace the muffler hanger. They sell for a bit on ebay but St. Paul still sells them for $7. I grabbed one over winter, I'll move it someday... I assume you have to make some kind of wire extension to still be able to plug it in. I really haven't looked into it though.

That's a good idea about redrilling that head shield. I did notice it was tough to fit that shield back on with the battery turned sideways and the regular mounted on the side. There's little notch marks on the back corner of my battery where the screw is clearly wedged against it. Next time I pull mine apart I'll see about drilling a new hole and seeing if I can just move that clamp.

The relocation bracket for the upgraded exhaust hangar was for the 99+ tubers that have the regulator at the front of the engine. The regulator was rotated 90 degrees to clear the new hangar. You could use it on any tuber, I suppose, but it was specifically to accommodate the new hangar, not to encourage people to move the regulator on pre-99 models where the new hangar does not interfere with the existing regulator location.

ooh so the bikes that use the mounting bracket in the St. Paul link I posted were bikes that already had the regulator on that part of the bike? That makes more sense, and explains why I've never seen anyone mentioning anything about the wiring when they used it.
