Just look at the VIN number for your bike, check the final four numbers of it, if they match any of the numbers on that cover then snag it and be happy.

Price is bit high though without the rest of the paperwork that came with it. I've got it bookmarked to see where it ends up, and to go home and check my own VIN. He might be open to counter offers if it doesn't sell.

And what Henrik asked ; )
Henrik, I'll have a set of bars for you shortly.

Philly has a point. With the change in serial number sequences partway through the 1995 run, number 0001 of the new series (MZ4?) is actually about the 300th S2. Court! Help!
Looking at the roll call that Bartimus has been keeping (Oct 11, 2004), I see FMJ raised the issue back then:
"Vin # really does not reflect where you are in the line up of the number of S-2's built.David, you have a fairly early one--1994 build date,Carey J has the earliest I have seen with a june 1994 build date.My other was built in july 1994.My first was built in march of 1995--but it has the 0000035 vin #.I have no idea what the first series of vin's starts or ends at."
And Tramp. What about the extra one you've got?Wouldn't be #258 would it?

no, it matches my own vin, i just don't want or need it, and you could change it easily and legally, being it's not the actual stamping on your case and the characters are stamped shallow. don't forget, fellas, the california version numbers, which are different, hence mine has a very, very low final four numerals.
mine won't match anyone's here, being i own the bike, but i have no use for it. it's in the little box with the letter and thelaminated cert. of authenticity. maybe i'll crazy-glue it to my oil tank.

Tried my luck a few weeks back and sent in the info for my S2 to Buell. I was quite surprized last week when a lady from Buell called to tell me that she was sorry, but Buell no longer was offering the sig series plates. Tramp, if you really don't want/need the thing, I've got a happy home for it!

Tramp,
gotcha, figured as much was just needlin' ya back ; )
Sooooo basically if I find one that says #700/1399 I oughta just buy it and go with it is your advice? Since it was built in 94, and couldn't be 1700 of 1399, that works for me.

absolutely...I'm just not big on posting my VIN anywhere on the 'net.... those final four numerals are the ones that count..
Fastco, lemme know what this thing is worth to ya, and if I'm out of line mentioning it here (you know..NOT in the classifieds) lemme know...it was just relevant to the subject, my objective is not about striking a deal here.

Those cover #'s are very confusing--I just pulled mine out and it is numbered as a California S-2 # 35 of 86,so that throws another variable into trying to figure out the vin# vs the number in the build.

CA VIN's will have a different letter in them and there were no 1995 S-2's in CA.

A fellow named Ed Law (at Perfect Circle Pistons) if memory served tried to sell a 49er in CA but it was a fiasco from the get-go.

Then again....

i think i brought up the california version vin disparity, 7 posts back... the first thing we always had to do with the cal. version s2s was to toss the edelbrock qwuicksliver and retrofit the keihin cv, and toss the carbon canister and the Napa emission hose

Court, there were at least a few S-2's in Ca in 1995 as I bought my 1995 shiny red S-2 in july of 1995 at Vallejo HD.Build date of 3/95,came with Quiksilver carb and carbon cannister.Saw 2 others go out the door the week before.

There were indeed 1995 S2 Thunderbolts made for the CA (California) market. They used the Quiksilwer carb and carbon cannister as mentioned previously.

86 does seem about right for 1995 CA S2's. And Ed Law was with Total Seal Piston Rings (at least when he sold me some rings when I T'Stormed my S2 in '98).

I'd go along with about July of 1995. There was about a one year lag from the other states. I'll go back sometime and check the manufacturing database and see if I can find the first one to go to CA.

Except there was no such animal as a 1995 S2T,only made 1 year--1996.Can tell a "T" by the charcoal frame and sideplates. You could have gotten an S-2 with all the accessories so it was similar.

didn't another poster just say there were NO '95 s2 cal.s made? ...trust me, this machine, in stock 'charcoal' powder with fairing lowers and bags, etc. (back when she wasn't nekkid), is a '95.
bear in mind as well, that the titles for many examples listed 'em as rr1200s and rs1200s, esp. in cal.
my '95 s2t calif.was titled (by the manufacturer) in ca. as an rs1200, (trust me, it's an s2t)
my '97 s3t was titled (with all correct existing original vins) as an rr1200- when i flipped over to a NYS title, it now lists the model code as "unavailable"...right there on me title, me hearties!
incidentally, the '95 S2 california is pictured (in all it's 'artist formerly known as parkway purple rain' paintscheme) in rafferty's "the illustrated directory of harley davidson motorcycles" and you can see the evap hose plain as day in ziptied to the frame member near the battery.
so when you go to check that manufacturing database, court, lemme know how many '95 rs1200's and '97 rr1200's you locate. i've seen many of these mistitlings come through my own shop.

You are saying that the title (MSO) from the FACTORY listed it as an RS or an RR?

That would surprise me.

On the other hand, I'd beleive anything from a state licensing agency. Back in the "good old days" I had someone tell me "there is no BUELL, you have to choose Buick or Bricklin".

If you have a 1995 Buell with RR or RS on the MSO send me the VIN, I'd like to see what it was when it left.

s2pengy- i'm referring to model year, not just mfg. year.
court- i've got all my paperwork here in front of me. both machines were stickered and billed by the dealers correctly, that is, s2t and s3t. both california titles, however, brandy-new, read rr1200 and rs1200, respectively. as in most dealer-cases, the state titling was done by the dealer with their in-house insurance group, so the titles i rec'd were cal. state titles. as to 'mso' i couldn't say for sure, as, again, i rec'd new vehicle cal. titles with each machine. i would not be surprised if california, being a bit ...oh...behind the ball....with regard to buell taxonomy, did not LIST an s2 in '95, as you suggest in a roundabout way.... as to my S3 though, what th...
i'll send you my vin the moment i receive your (verifiable) social security number and credit card number -jay
seriously, though- it would be cool to see what the factory lists in terms of these model years,
please keep me apprised...what was the last year of the actual rs1200, court (or anyone)? i thought '93, but i'm not too sure about that, now

There were no S2's shipped to CA the first 12 months of production...trust me, it was a BIG deal.

I'm guessing, given this thread, that they started shipping mid-95.

you bring up an interesting point/myth, court- obviously, i'm more than metaphysically aware of the existence of the '95 S2T california, being that i ride one every day- i do remember, however, (being that i was living in california in '95) there was a big issue with the machines passing cal. emissions standards, and i recall (bad choice of words for our machines- my bad) being told, back then, that the edelbrock qwicksilver carb was fitted to the s2 cal. for a "noise emission" issue. does that weirdness/myth ring a bell? i found it purdy implausible, but i got it from dealerships. i was working for a bmw mc dealership at the time, and found this rumour bizarre, at best. what do you remember as the reason for the qwicksilver?

and incidentally, the cal versions don't have "a different letter in them", but, in fact, a different #('11' for 49er, '56' for ca.). this might be a cause for some of the confusion
