After looking around for what seemed an eternity for a non-factory replacement muffler, I decided to build my own. A little research resulted in buying the following parts from Summit racing; Part numbers: FLO-12518409 and VPE-2628. With a few cuts of the pipe, installation of an additional clamp and brackets for the front iso mount and it's on and sounds great. I did need to have the pipe expanded to fit over the stock header collector. I also trimmed the outlet on the muffler back to the weld to allow for more rear wheel clearance, then used a section of the u-bend to create the turn-out on the outlet end of the muffler. I will post pics of the exhaust unassembled and installed, along with fabbed part dimensions. I'm exhausted!

Thanks s1, it all came together and works better than expected, I guess 30+ years of welding and fabrication pays once in a while.

Looks great! I'd like to build a new exhaust to replace the V&H on mine someday. Going back to stock for now though.

With your experience, I'm sure the integrity of your welds are great, but make sure the mounts are pretty beefy. Exhaust mounts on these bikes are known to have some problems with cracking.

Did you make the exhaust for the xs650, or did you do the whole bike? I'd love an xs650 project someday. That's quite the rear brake setup!

There was a ton of fabrication on this project, yes I did build the exhaust pipes and mufflers from raw materials along with the mounts, rear caliper mount, rear brake master cylinder mount, side covers and tons more. I powder coated everything except the shiny parts. It was a fun project to say the least.

Hory Shet! a six piston for the rear?

You would have to ride barefooted and use one toe on the pedal!

Yeah, a bit Overkill but I wanted to do something that I haven't seen for a rear brake system, I did change the geometry on the master cylinder linkage to prevent sensitive braking , along with the double disk in the front the bike stopped fairly quickly with little effort. Thanks everyone for the positive feedback, ride safe!
