Starter went out on my 2001 S3T, This is about the fifth starter I am replacing. I have been buying the less expensive starters on e-bay ($130). Still getting 1.4kv though. Bike has 105k, any ideas on a better quality starter without breaking the bank. V-Twin sells what should be a good starter for around $300.... All thoughts welcome.... Thanx

Your local alternator shop can rebuild them for around $50. Moisture seems the be the culprit in the failures of my starters.

When you say the starter went out, what do you mean? What is the failure? Is it the motor itself, or the solenoid?

Just stopped working, not even a click, had to hit it with a hammer to get home from work. Was making a grinding noise.

i can't believe that this is just bad luck. i have an 04 Superglide with 55K miles and orig starter and belt. are you sure it's not your charging system? low cranking amps can mimic a bad starter.

5 starters huh. Me thinks its not the starter. What is the 1.4kv number referring to? The starter runs on 12v.

Is the ring gear under your clutch basket flat? Five starters in a row would not fail unless something is making them work too hard.

The 1.4kv is power, stock is 1.2kv. The five starters is over an 17 year period and 105,000 miles. Not in a row, was just wondering, with all the knowledge on this board if someone knew of a better brand of starter....

The drag specialties 1.7kw starters are torque monsters! But they are not cheap. My price is $345.

If you just want a good stock upgrade then the Drag specialties 1.4kw starters have worked really well for my customers. Those cost $250.

That's still an average of ~20K per starter. I had to replace my starter at 40K because the insulation on the wire that goes into the starter had failed and let water in. No idea why yours have failed? Did they fail the same way each time?

Yeah, they all pretty much died the same. I think the original lasted a bit longer, but as I said I have been buying the cheap ones off e-bay. Gonna talk to the local alternator shop and see what they can do. I appreciate all the info... Glad I am due for a trans oil change anyway...

Did you take any of them apart to suss out what's the actual failure mode?

Took the one I still had at the house to the alt shop. They took it apart and said it was shot, rusted up inside.... As Kc Zombie said, moister was the culprit...
