I'm new hear so Hi everyone. I bought my bike last year. It is so sloppy to shift. Trying to find new linkage and such. Can I use a sportster linkage kit? Also the toe peg is so darn short. Does anyone know the size of the thread? I'd like to buy a longer peg.

The 01 X1 has a better shifter than the 99 and 00. Your only better option is to have one custom made (there are several folks here who have machined their own), or find an existing Banke shifter used. They pop up from time to time. Banke still has the ability to make more, and they will if you ask. Going to be expensive though. We did a group buy of shifters from them about two or three years ago. Call for pricing.

There have been some nice shifters on ebay recently, I believe someone on the forum makes them(or else it's someone in one of the facebook Buell groups). They look very nice, similar to the Banke style shifters. They'll run you about $350 shipped, or $360 if you have the chin fairing. There's also a set that includes the matching brake lever that'll run you about $475 shipped.

Like Jeff said, there is an updated shifter that bolts to the engine, if you're still using the peg mounted boomerang shifter. Even used ones seem to cost about $200 plus on ebay though.

It's usually easy to make your current shifter feel a lot better without replacing it though. There's a plastic bushing between shifter and your peg that gets worn down, replacing that(https://st-paul-harley-davidson-buell.myshopify.co m/collections/s1-lightning-models/products/n0513-2 a-n0514-2-genuine-buell-shifter-brake-pivot-bushin g-washer), adjusting your clutch and cable, and making sure you've got fresh oil will make a notable difference. Mine isn't what I'd consider smooth, but when I bought the bike it felt like I was shifting a sandbag, and it at least has a *click* to it now.

As far as the threads, I'm not home to measure mine now, but any sportster toe shifter should fit. I picked up one of these on ebay and it fit perfectly fine. My bike has the steel shifter, so it just has hole and is held on with a nut from the back side. If yours has an aluminum shifter I believe the shifter is threaded, but I'm pretty sure all of the pegs use the same size anyway.

Josh, I think he already has the updated shifter, not the boomerang. 01 was the first year of the new shifter. And I agree...could be an adjustment issue, either with the clutch or the primary chain.

Now, having said that, the sportster transmission, which is what you have there, Kenna, is not known for its silky smooth operation. Give it a good adjustment, by the manual, both in clutch lever free play, and primary chain, and then see how it feels.

I checked his profile for a picture of the bike, but I didn't see one so I wasn't sure.

You're lucky if you have the updated one. If you do, the clutch and cable adjustment is your best bet. If you really want to get into things, they have an updated shift detent plate you can replace. You have to get inside the primary cover if you want to get that involved though. People who have done it seem pleased with the results. The old plate was more rounded, the new one was a little more star shaped, so it was also meant to give you a better click when you shift. It's on my list of updates, but haven't gotten to it yet so I can't give a personal opinion on that one.

So it looks like I have the boomerang. I think I’ll try the bushings first. The peg is definitely a male on mine and by the way I am a female. Thanks everyone.

Sorry. It’s covered in back yard next to a road king. Had to take pics at weird angle.

Photobucket is the worst anymore. If you save the pictures to your computer, you can upload them directly to the site, and not have to worry about dead links.

Somewhere out there I remember seeing an upgraded kit that has a brass bushing, instead of the plastic one. I'm not sure if they're still available though. I ended up finding a similarly sized brass bushing at Ace Hardware and sanded/filed it down until it fit. Unfortunately I think I files it a tiny bit too far and I still have a little slop, but for the $2 I paid for the piece, it's fine. I can try again someday. I think a new plastic one will make a notable change though, mine was pretty rough and worn out when I replaced it.

I think those brass bushings are all over ebay.

That new style shifter is OEM on 01 bikes. If you've got a boomerang, you either do not have an 01, or someone, for reasons I cannot fathom, put an older shifter on a newer bike.

Gravity happens.

Boomerangs are cheaper and more plentiful on eBay.

Just a guess.

You already have the Bank shifter. Count yourself lucky. Give it a good adjustment and see what happens.

Replace the 608 bearing in that shifter and it should take out a lot of the “slop” in that shifter.

I'm one of the weirdos that actually likes the boomerang shifter.
It pivots on the same axis as your peg.
When the bushing is in good shape and greased it shifts quite well.

I like the boomerang as well. Works fine on both my antiques (S2 and S1W) : )

Big time lucky! That's as good of a shifter as you can get for these bikes. You should be able to get it to shift well with a little attention. It's also a good sign that you probably got a bike that was well loved and taken care of by the previous owner if he was putting parts like that on his bike.

This is the shifter we're referring to when you hear someone talking about boomerang shifters.

I see the difference now. They guy I bought it from had it for about four months and didn't like it, which was good that he couldn't abuse it. He is used to true crotch rockets and didn't like the ride. I was drawn to it because I had a Harley and missed it and knew this would be a well made unique machine.

The other thing to mention, now that I see you have the banke shifter... I'm not positive if the shifter peg has the same threading as the OEM parts. Your best bet will be to pull it out and see what size hole and thread pitch is in there, and whether it's metric or SAE, so you can be sure you're ordering the correct replacement.

Great looking bike! A bunch of nice looking stuff on there!

Any pictures of how the gauges are mounted? I was thinking of changing mine, curious to see how yours are on there

Isn't that the stock dash?

That "muffler" looks a bit loud. I really like the color. Too bad they didn't do the swingarm while they were at it. The stock finish is tough to keep clean. It also looks like the seat has been recovered.

It is a stock dash. Muffler is very loud! Can't wear a skull bucket without ear plugs that for sure. Kid I bought it from Painted it himself. He did a decent job, nothing grand though. Seat has been recovered. I hate it, I'd prefer a new one...eventually.

It's the stock dash, but i was curious what it's bolted to. Normally they bolt onto the handlebar clamp, but you've got oversized bars and a different bar clamp.

It looks to me like it's a stock dash, and stock triple tree (with mount)...with a bar spacer to raise the bar cradle an inch or so, and adding a top clamp for the different bars.

Guess I've never looked that closely at an X1 bar/gauge setup. I had assumed it was the same as my S1 where the mount is built into the top bar mount. So the X1s have the gauge mount built into the top triple?
