My subframe was a bit dinged up and dirty. I had a "duh" moment after realizing it was coated (this was after I had blasted it with some brake cleaner to try to get it cleaned up).

It was looking pretty awful, so I decided to take a drill + wire brush to it. After much brushing, I got it down to bare aluminum and then coated it with penetrol.

I think it looks pretty good. Hopefully it'll hold up, but if it doesn't it's easy enough to re-brush or properly prime/paint.

That does look nice.
My big X1W project was plugging in a battery tender a few minutes ago. Not as difficult as one might think!

Sorry but it won't hold up.
Bare Aluminum reacts pretty quickly so it'll turn Grey on you pretty quick.
Once you polish a thing, you're stuck polishing it forever after : )

I'll be in the same boat as you soon as my clearcoating is disintegrating from my swingarm and other bits.

But besides the doom and gloom, it looks great to me right now at least : )

Its not bare it has penetrol on it. Just wipe it down once a year with the penetrol snd you are good same stuff they use on bare aluminum antique aircraft!

All the bare aluminum on this was coated over a year ago with penetrol. Looks just like the first day

oooh yeah I hadn't noticed it, but that is a really nice floor. Is it one of the painted/epoxy floors with the chips and clearcoat? or something different? I did mine in white VCT tiles and it looks like a mess haha.

The floor seems pretty topical, since we're discussing surfaces. Looks super nice!

I'm in the Boston city limits and feel lucky to have a tiny tiny garage (that would maybe fit a mini cooper in it) – but I'd still love to have more space.

Actually, it would be fun to have a dedicated garage thread : )

I did this case over two years ago. Used a Scotch Brite flapper wheel and coated it with Sharkhide.

Designed to coat raw aluminum to keep it from tarnishing.

How do you deal with the gasket mating surfaces?
Masking tape?

Never touched them. Avoided any contact with them.
