Mine is also making a noise around 2000-2100rpm, almost like a rattling. I'm assuming it's coming from something under the primary cover. It's perfectly fine at all RPMs under and above that. I need to pull the cover off after riding season anyway, so I'm hoping I can just avoid that RPM range somewhat till then. If you just picked this bike up, I'd pull off the primary cover and see if anything stands out. Did you check the tension on the primary chain to make sure it's not so loose that it's hitting the engine case? You can also pick up a mechanics stethoscope($4 at harbor freight) and see if you can narrow it down to what part of the engine it's coming from. |

Very fine dust may be normal break in debris. How many miles on it, and how often do you change the filter? Can't hurt to pop the timing cover and check the crank nut. They've been known to back off if not torqued properly. DO NOT USE IMPACT TOOLS to remove or tighten that nut, and remember that the clutch nut is a left hand thread, should you decide to pull things further apart to inspect for damage. |

Loose primary won't put metal in your engine oil. |

The knock and the metal dust may not be related. |

So sorry to suggest the lower crank bearings are damaged and are being destroyed. Easy to do this in a very short time. My daughter destroyed hers in less than two months. All it takes is to run the motor hard at RPMs under 3000. (Lugging the motor). Too much pressure is placed on the individual roller bearings and destroys them. Soon a piston will contact the head and that will be the end. Rebuild will be about $2000 - $3000 USD if most of the work is done at home. $5000 USD for a shop to rebuild it. Well it is confirmed i tore into it today and it is the rod bearings that have started to loosen, so looks like a pricey road ahead |
