That's how far my bike will go until the tank is completely empty. I found that out this morning when I also found out that the on/res switch doesn't work anymore. I'm not sure if the little tube for "on" fell off the petcock and is just rolling around the bottom of the tank or what, but "on" will officially drain until the tank is empty. Luckily I was down the hill from a gas station so it only took a few minutes to walk there. They didn't even sell gas cans there, but luckily the cashier was too preoccupied with his phone to notice me dumping out the glass bottle of lemonade and filling it with gasoline at the pump. |

Gas stations at the bottom of the hill are my choice |

it was all uphill to this one, so I wasn't about to try pushing the bike there. It would've been great if it was downhill. There was a time about 15 years ago when I ran out of gas, but was right by a station I was able to just pull the clutch in and coast straight up to a pump. Talk about lucky. |

If you pull the petcock out of the tank, there's a metal screen/filter tube on the inside. Pull that tube off and there's a pickup straw inside; that's your "main" pickup, and when you flip to reserve you bypass the straw and go to a simple hole at the bottom inside the screen. I've seen straws both come off, and have holes in them. Just because the straw is still attached doesn't mean it doesn't have a hole in it somewhere... I've also had tanks that are gunked up from years of crappy fuel, and the crap level is about even with the top of the main straw. Valve could be working fine and there could be a half gallon in the tank...but it can't get through all the crap in the screen. 135 is about where I normally hit reserve on my tubers (S2 and manta-tank S1W / M2) so my wild-ass guess would be plugged up screen. |

Yup....that sounds about right for my tiny tank S1. I have always chickened out at about 115-120 miles. I have it all torn apart replacing the isolators right now, but when it goes back together, its getting a Manta tank on it. My commute is 120 miles round trip. I grew tired of sweating it out on my ride home wondering if I was riding it too hard to get there. |

It used to work fine, but the reserve would always come on around 80 miles, and I don't think I've ever taken the reserve past 120 or so. I've always wanted to pull it out and cut the straw shorter, because I feel like there's still a ton of gas in the tank when I have to switch it. Being a 20 year old motorcycle, I was hesitant to pull something off that didn't really need it, only to cause a leak, or find out the plastic stripped where the screw goes into the tank. I guess now I've got my reason to pull it. I actually have a new petcock sitting on a shelf. I bought it after I got the bike last year, and noticed someone had rebuilt the petcock upside down. "Off" was pointed upwards, and on/res were opposite. I was able to just pull it apart and put it back together properly, but ordered the new petcock ahead of time because I was expecting to pull it apart, and have it leak after it went back together. I've always been curious exactly how much gas it held, as people have said these small tanks were 4 gallons, but I didn't think that sounded right. I put 3.2 gallons in it after I already put in the lemonade bottle's worth and rode about 3.5 miles. I'd guess the tank holds a total of around 3.3 gallons. |

You don't need to worry to much about pulling the petcock causing a leak. It's sealed with an "O" ring so it's very reliable. I hope you didn't pay much for the new petcock - they're Acerbis and can be gotten for $20. |

I was more worried about the o-ring being dried out or the plastic threads on the tank stripping. I'll be gentle and see what I find. The replacement I got was one of the acerbis pieces. Now I'll just have to find another gas cap and I'll have everything I need for the manta tank I've got sitting in the garage. |
