I'm a newly to the forum, but hear that there isn't anything you guys don't know. I've got a 2000 X1 that I'm planning on racing on the salt. I have a Super E carb and SuperTrapp muffler, but everything else looks pretty stock. I'd like to get somewhere around 150 MPH this year and am looking to those of you who have already done this as to where I'll get the biggest bang for the buck. Suggestions?

Welcome TKiisel,
i thought the X1 was EFI?
I have never run on salt, so i can't help as totally different to what i'm used to, like the traction would not be as good, so bulk torque could be lost in wheel spin, what is best speed you have done to date?

The Fireman just returned from Australia . . .where I heard he cracked 200mph on an unpaired bike . . . .

He'd know the details you need.

At one time . . MOST (>50%) of the Bonneville Salt Flats "150 Club" were folks riding Buells and most of them the same Buell . . Susan's "pit bike".

Lakes, sometime before I purchased the bike, it was changed to carburetor. Supposedly, the EFI was kind of wonky and they couldn't dial it in.

At the very least, you will have to alter the gearing as the redline comes at like 140.
The salt isn't pavement either.
The rear will be spinning a bit faster than the front.
I used to see this effect on my little KLR250 bombing down a hardpacked dirt road.
The speedo would say 60 and the tach would be indicating 7500 or more which on pavement translated to 75.
I can only imagine the effect even more pronounced on an actual full sized bike with a real engine.

Again, firemenjim is THE guy and I am just some tool on the East coast so take that with a grain of salt.

Tkiisel, no worries, i find carb easy & quick Shorty E on small side i don't think would be much diff in flow to the stock CV40.

If Fireman Jim came to Australia, he would have been at Lake Gairdner in South Australian outback

Thanks Natexlh1000, that's good advice and something I've been considering.

I have some Bonneville experience (mostly with Buells in the "Production" class). Send a note if you'd like some insight.

You guys do realize that Fireman Jim has not raced a Buell or even an American bike in many years now right?

A stock X1 with just a carb and exhaust will go about 120-130 mph (real mph not speedo) at Bonneville with a 180lb rider. Your bike makes about 85 hp now. To get into the 150 range will require about 110-120 hp.

http://www.nrhsperformance.com/racing.shtml

To get into the 175 plus range will require extensive mods and lots of money.

Very True Buelledan!
guy i know just has a 124 s&s motor with B2 heads and the s&s cams that motor comes with 2000 twin cam dyna stock frame stock front wheel dues soft ail 17" rear wheel s&s D carb he calmed it made a lot of power but they dyno he uses seems to show a lot more HP than i think he has. he has been 138 mph standing quarter @ 9.8 ET
best speed he did this year at lake gardener salt was 150mph HP = speed, i always see higher trap speeds at drags on days with better air quality, if you have not got the HP you won't do high speeds, but airo dynamic's help too
